HAYWARD, Calif.-- On the last day of the regular season, Stan State clinched the final spot for the six-team CCAA Baseball Championships with a 3-1 victory over the hosts, Cal State East Bay Pioneers in Hayward, Calif., this afternoon.
Maxwell Pappas (4-4) picked up the win in the start while
Noah Chelberg and
Anthony Ramirez (ninth save) pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out four and giving up four hits.
Alex Solis was two-for-four with two runs batted in and the trio of
Robert Valdivia,
Mac Cabero, and
Jacob Baker went a combined seven-for-11 with two runs scored for the victors.
Stan State (26-23, 19-20 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in its half of the second inning.
Alex Solis and
Mac Cabero had back-to-back lead-off singles. Solis was out at third when
Tyler Van Dyk reached on a fielder's choice. With one out,
Jacob Baker had a single to left field to load the bases.
JD Madrigal drove in Cabero with a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors doubled their lead to 2-0 with a run int eh third inning.
Robert Valdivia had a one-out double down the left field line. He scored on a two-out double to left field by Solis.
Max Pappas (4-4) had a perfect game going until one out in the Pioneer fourth when Manny Garcia drew a walk. He induced the next Pioneer batter to ground out into an inning 6-4-3 double play. Pappas had a no-hitter going until the Cal State East Bay's fifth. Cole Anderson had a two-out single followed by a Connor McWard single. Pappas induced the final out of the inning on a pop out to Cabero at second.
Cal State East Bay (27-23, 21-19 CCAA) cut the Warrior lead in half in its half of the sixth inning. Samuel Esparza began the inning reaching on a Warrior fielding error. He scored on a Luke Brown to left field to cut the Stan State lead to 2-1.
The Warriors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead.
Danny Murphy had a lead-off single went to second on a
Kyle Rachels sacrifice bunt but he also reached on a Pioneer error. Valdivia reached on a fielder's choice which Murphy was thrown out at third.
Flavio Perez had a one-out single to load the bases. Solis drove in Rachels with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Cal State East Bay had a chance to tie or take the lead in its half of the ninth. Matthew O'Mahony had a lead-off single. He went to third on a one-out double to left field by Anderson. Stan State's
Anthony Ramirez induced the next batter to ground out to Perez at third. Ramirez struck out the final Pioneer batter to preserve the 3-1 Warrior victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had eleven hits on the day with four Warriors with multiple-hit games in
Mac Cabero (three-for-four),
Robert Valdivia (two-for-four),
Alex Solis (two-for-four), and
Jacob Baker (two-for-three). Solis drove in two of Stan State's three runs. Baker stole two bases to give him 17 on the season while Valdivia and Solis each had a double.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Maxwell Pappas picked up the win improving to 4-4 on the season. He pitched six innings, giving up three hits and one unearned run while walking one.
Noah Chelberg pitched 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three.
Anthony Ramirez recorded his ninth save of the season by pitching a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.
UP NEXT: Stan State returns to the CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament for the first time since 2019 and third time since 2017. The Warriors won their first-round game over Chico State 11-6 in 2019, but lost the next two 8-2 to Cal State Monterey Bay and 8-5 to San Francisco State. The Warriors will face Cal State East Bay in the first round of this year's CCAA Baseball Championships at the Otters Sports Complex on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, Calif., on Wednesday, May 10 at noon. This will be a single elimination game. If the Warriors win, they will advance to the second round on Thursday, May 11 at 9:30am and face the number one seed and host, Cal State Monterey Bay.
