SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--- Simon Fraser scored two second half goals to key its 2-1 victory over Stan State this afternoon in both team's regular season opener at the Heritage Club Classic in Santa Barbara.
Tyler Tipton scored the match's first goal for the Warriors in the 32
nd minute off a ball from
Kai Perez. Koji Poon scored both of the goals for Simon Fraser unassisted in the 60
th and 63
rd minutes.
FIRST HALF: Elio Corral had a chance to give Stan State (0-1) the early 1-0 lead in the tenth minute, but his shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Red Leaf's Justyn Sandhu. The Warriors had another chance be stopped by Sandhu, this time off the foot of Alecxsander Cuellar in the 29
th minute. The Warriors took the 1-0 lead, two minutes later as
Tyler Tipton connected on a cross from
Kai Perez. It looked like the Warriors were doing to double their lead, but
Edgar Castaneda's shot attempt was stopped by the Red Leaf defense in the 35
th minute. Simon Fraser had a chance to tie the match in the 43
rd minute when Michael Hennessy's shot sailed wide right to send the match into the half with the Warriors leading 1-0.
SECOND HALF: Simon Fraser (1-0) came out of the locker room taking the half's first shot on goal attempt in the 52
nd minute. The Warriors'
Robby Rosas stopped Callum Beattie's shot and three minutes later snagged Isak Strand's shot on goal attempt. The Red Leafs tied the match at 1-1 in the 60
th minute as Koji Poon connected on the first of his two goals. Poon tied the match for Simon Fraser two minutes later. The Warriors had two corner kicks in the final minutes but could not connect as Simon Fraser held on for the 2-1 victory.
STATS: The Warriors and Simon Fraser each had eight shot attempts including each with three on goal.
Robby Rosas had three saves in goal for Stan State while Justyn Sandhu also had three. Simon Fraser had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
UP NEXT: Stan State will face Saint Martin's on Saturday, September 2 at 11:30am in its next match in Santa Barbara. The Saints defeated Westmont 1-0 later this afternoon today in Santa Barbara.
