LOS ANGELES, Calif.--- Stan State battled with the No. 21 Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles but fell in four sets (18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25) this afternoon to end its two-match road trip to Southern California to begin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Warriors will return to Fitzpatrick Arena this Friday, September 22 at 5pm when they host Cal Poly Humboldt on Campers Night.
FIRST SET: The beginning of the match was even until Cal State Los Angeles (4-6, 2-0 CCAA) took a 21-16 lead on an Emily Elliott kill. A kill by
Alex Byrd off an assist from
Haley Burdo cut the deficit to 22-18. The hosts finished the first set off recording the final three points to take the set 25-18 and to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
SECOND SET: Once again, the beginning of the second set was even until the reigning 2022 NCAA Division II West Region champions took a 21-16 lead on an Emily Elliott kill. An
Alex Byrd cut the deficit to 24-21, but it was a little too late as a Haley Roundtree kill gave the Golden Eagles the second set 25-21 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
THIRD SET: After returning from the intermission, the Warriors took a 11-9 lead to begin the third set. Stan State (5-5, 0-2 CCAA) increased its lead to 23-16 on an
Alex Byrd kill off an assist from
Haley Burdo. The hosts cut the deficit to 23-17, but the Warriors finished the set off recording the final three points including the final one on a
Mariah Iosua service ace, 25-18, and to make it CSULA 2-1.
FOURTH SET: Stan State kept its momentum from the third set and took a 14-9 early lead on an
Emily Meyer kill off a
Haley Burdo assist. A kill by Ashley Dittman cut the Warrior lead to just two (19-17). The Golden Eagles six of the next ten points to take a 23-20 lead in the fourth set. A kill by
Samaya Royal off an assist from
Eyriana Eatmon stopped the hosts' rally and cut their lead to 23-21. Cal State Los Angeles came right back and took the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
WARRIOR LEADERS: Mariah Iosua just missed a double-double as she had a team high 11 kills to go with her nine digs.
Alex Byrd added eight kills and four blocks.
Eyriana Eatmon had a team high three assists to go with her 16 digs.
Haley Burdo led the Warriors with 19 assists and
Gabby Rawson recorded 19 digs.
Samaya Royal led Stan State with five blocks followed by Byrd with four and
Isabella Saucedo with three.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will return home for a pair of CCAA matches this coming week. They will host Cal Poly Humboldt on Fri., Sept. 22 at 5pm on Campers Night at Fitzpatrick Arena. Stan State will face Sonoma State at 2pm on Sat., Sept. 23 also at The Fitz.
