Volleyball Sweeps Sonoma State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State swept the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves (who were receiving votes in this week's AVCA/NCAA Division II National Poll), 25-15, 25-18, 25-22, this afternoon in a conference match-up at The Fitz.  The Warriors had 15 service aces to key their win led by Eyriana Eatmon's seven.
 
FIRST SET:  in thanks to Eyriana Eatmon's three service aces, Stan State took a 9-5 lead to begin the match.  The Warriors increased their lead to 12-6 on a Seawolf hitting error.  A Stan State hitting error cut its lead to 13-11.  Gabby Rawson had two service aces surrounded by a kill by Mariah Iosua and Autumn Kirby as the hosts increased their lead to 20-13.  A combined block by Samaya Royal and Autumn Kirby increased their lead to 22-14.  Stan State recorded three of the set's final four points capped by a Mariah Iosua ace to give the hosts the 25-18 set one victory.
 
SECOND SET:  The second set was back and forth until Stan State (6-6, 1-3 CCAA) took a 12-8 lead on a combined block by Samaya Royal and Alex Byrd.  A Leilani Hallman kill tied the set at 13-13, but the Warriors took a 16-14 lead keyed by a Mariah Iosua kill off an assist from Haley Burdo.  The Warriors increased their lead to 21-16 on another kill by Iosua.  The hosts finished off the set recording four of the final six points capped by an Ellison Weaver off an assist from Haley Burdo as Stan State took the set 25-18 and took a 2-0 lead in the match. 
 
THIRD SET:  Once again, the third set went back and forth until Sonoma State (8-3, 3-1 CCAA) took a 14-9 lead.  A kill by Ellison Weaver off an assist from Eyriana Eatmon cut the deficit to 17-16.  The guests took a 19-16 lead, but the Warriiors took a 20-19 lead on a combined block by Weaver and Alex Byrd.  A kill by Brookyln Jackson tied the set at 20-20, but the Warriors finished off the set recording five of the final seven points including the final point on a combined block by Byrd and Emily Vander Weide.  Stan State took the set 25-22 and the match, 3-0.
 
SECOND SWEEP. Stan State's three-set sweep of the Seawolves of Sonoma State was the Warriors' second sweep of the season.  They swept Fresno Pacific (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) on September 2 in their Labor Day Tournament.
 
SNAP THAT STREAK: The Warriors snapped their four-match losing streak to Sonoma State this afternoon with their three-set sweeps of the Seawolves.  Stan State last defeated the Seawolves in five sets on October 5, 2019, in Turlock. Theis was the Warriors' first sweep of Sonoma State since October 17, 2018 (25-15, 25-20, 25-18) in Turlock.
 
THIRD DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Mariah Iosua recorded her third double-double of the season and second consecutive this afternoon with 13 kills and 10 digs.  Iosua has three in her career as a Warrior.
 
RAWSON:  Gabby Rawson had 17 digs this afternoon to finish with 47 for the weekend.  This ties the CCAA high this season.  Heading into the weekend, Rawson was fifth in the nation in digs per set.

LEADERS: Mariah Iosua had 13 kills to lead the way to go with Haley Burdo's 12 assists and Eyriana Eatmon's ten.  Gabby Rawson added 17 digs to go with Iosua's ten.  Alex Byrd recorded six blocks while Samaya Royal added five. Eatmon had seven service aces for the hosts.
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State will commence on a four-match road trip beginning this Friday, September 29 at No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona (3pm).  The Warriors will travel to Cal State San Marcos for a 3pm match with the Cougars a week from this evening, September 30.  They will return home on October 9 at 1pm to host No. 12 Chaminade.
