Warriors Finish Season Long Home Stand with Conference Openers

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State men's soccer team will finish off their season long five-match home stand this weekend with a pair of conference matches.  The Warriors will begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) hosting Cal State San Marcos (Fri., Sept. 29 at 4:30pm) and Cal State East Bay (Sun., Oct. 1 at 7pm).  Friday's match is Stanislaus State Student Affairs Night.  
 
UPDATE ON THE WARRIORS:  Stan State is 3-4 after going 1-1 in its two non-conference matches of the regular season (defeating Academy of Art 3-1 and falling 3-2 to No. 5 Chico State).  The Warriors have scored 13 goals this season with 10 assists.  Tyler Tipton leads the team with his seven goals and 14 points.  Edgar Castaneda is next with seven points (three goals, one assist) followed by Finn Hoffmann (two goals, two assists, six points).  Sammy Villanueva has three points (one goal, one assist) and Leonardo Muniz has two assists. Four Warriors have one assist each in Chase Koptieff, Nick Namwali, Kai Perez, and Ryan Rosas.  Tipton, Castaneda, and Hoffmann each have a game-winning goal this season.  Robby Rosas has posted a 1.86 goals against average in seven matches in goal.  He has recorded 34 saves with a .723 saves percentage.  
 
LAST MATCHES: The Warriors went 1-1 last week in their final two non-conference matches last week.  Stan State defeated Academy of Art 3-1 on Tuesday.  Tyler Tipton scored twice, and Finn Hoffmann had the game-winner.  Leonardo Muniz and Nick Namwali each had an assist with Robby Rosas recording eight saves in goal.  Stan State lost a 3-2 nail biter to then No. 5 Chico State on Saturday evening.  Tipton and Sammy Villanueva each scored the Warriors' goals.  Villanueva along with Hoffmann and Ryan Rosas each had assists on the Stan State two goals.  Robby Rosas had three saves in goal for the Warriors.    
 
FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACH:  John Powell'11 returned to his alma mater as the Warriors' head men's soccer coach when he was hired this Spring after spending the past two seasons on the sidelines at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Powell guided the Nighthawks to a 15-4-3 record this season including an appearance in the NCAA Division II Super Region Four Final (Elite Eight).  He was the 2022 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year and guided the Nighthawks to their best season in program history.  They captured the GNAC regular season title and won three NCAA Division II Tournament matches, before losing 1-0 to the National Champion Runner-up, Colorado State-Pueblo.  He coached twelve All-GNAC honorees and four All-Region players during his two-years at NNU. In his four seasons coaching at Stan State and Northwest Nazarene with a 30-23-3 overall record. 


CCAA OPENERS:  Coach Powell and the 2023 Warriors will begin their CCAA season this Friday, September 29 at 4:30pm hosting Cal State San Marcos on Student Affairs Night. This will be the beginning of an 11-match CCAA schedule. After Friday evening's match, the Warriors will host Cal State East Bay on Sunday, October 1 at 11:30am. 
 
Stan State will look to qualify for the six-team CCAA Men's Soccer Championships.  The Semi-finals and Finals of the CCAA Men's Soccer Championships will be hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, Calif., Nov. 10-12.  The First Round is set for Sunday, Nov. 5 at the site of the higher seed (either the third or fourth seed). 

CCAA LEADERS:  Tyler Tipton leads the CCAA with his seven goals, 14 points, 1.00 goals per game average, and 2.0 points per game average.  Edgar Castaneda is seventh in the conference with his .500 goals per game average and tied for seventh with his three goals.  Robby Rosas leads the CCAA with his 34 saves is second with his 4.86 saves per game average, and ninth with his .723 saves percentage.  
 
NATIONAL LEADERS:  In the latest NCAA Division II statistical report, Tyler Tipton is fifth in shot accuracy (.789), sixth in goals scored (seven), eighth in goals per game (1.00/game), 13th in total points (14), and 15th in points per game (2.00/game).  Robby Rosas is 19th with his 34 saves in goal.  
 
ONE GOAL:  All four of the Warriors' losses have been by just one goal.  Of their three victories, two have been decided by one goal and one by two goals.  Stan State has given up 13 goals this season in seven matches while they have scored 13 goals.
 
CAL STATE SAN MARCOS:  The Cougars enter this Friday's match with Stanislaus State with a 3-3-1 record after going 1-3-1 since opening the season 2-0.  This past week, the Cougars lost 3-1 to Point Loma and 1-0 to Cal State East Bay.  Ryan Meinardus leads the CSUSM with his three goals, one assist, and seven points. Curtis Collazos is next on the team with his two goals, two assists for six points while Brooklyn Baker has scored two goals.  Stefano Brunetto has assisted on two goals for the Cougars.  Meinardus, Collazos, and Aaron Alvarez each have recording a game-winning goal.  Tony Flores has a 1.00 goals against average with 11 saves, two shutouts, and a .688 saves percentage in five matches.  Jesus Mentado has a 2.00 goals against average with five saves and a .556 saves percentage in two matches.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State San Marcos leads the all-time series with the Warriors 4-1-2 including defeating Stan State 1-0 last year in San Marcos on September 25, 2022.  Stan State's only win over the Cougars was a 1-0 victory on October 22, 2021, in Turlock when Josh Santillan connected on a cross from Finn Hoffman in the seventh minute.  
 
CAL STATE EAST BAY: The Pioneers are 5-1-1 and have won four of their last five matches including both matches last week on the road over UC Santa Cruz (2-1) and Cal State San Marcos (1-0).  Adan Corona has posted a 0.71 goals against average in goal with 23 saves, three shutouts, and an 821 saves percentage.  Aaron Farnan leads the team with his four goals, one assist, nine points, and two game-winning goals.  Julian Valle is next on East Bay with one goal, one assist, and four points.  Michael Rossi, Bradley Moorhouse, and Tim Cerjak each have one goal, one assist, and three points.  The Pioneers other game-winning goals have come from Rossi, Leon Eisert, and Clayton Branco.  
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Stan State leads the all-time series with the Pioneers 10-5-3.  The Warriors went 1-0-1 with the Pioneers last season.  The teams tied their match 1-1 in Hayward on September 17, 2022, when Adam Mockridge scored the tying goal late in the match.  The Warriors defeated Cal State East Bay in both team's season finale in Turlock on October 27, 2022. Chase Koptieff scored twice with Tyler Tipton and Nick Namwali each scored a goal for the Warriors in their 4-2 victory.

UP NEXT:  After Sunday's match with the Pioneers, Stan State will be on the road for a pair of matches, October 6 and 8.  They will be at No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino for a 3pm match with the Yotes on Fri., Oct. 6.  Stan State will end its two-match road trip to the Inland Valley Empire with a 2pm starting match with No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona on Sun., Oct. 8.  The Warriors will continue their three-match road trip with a 3pm starting match at Cal Poly Humboldt on Thurs., Oct. 12 before returning home to host Sonoma State on Sun., Oct. 15 at 2pm.
