TURLOCK, Calif.--- In the 2023 CCAA opener for both teams this evening at Warrior Stadium, the Cal State San Marcos Cougars defeated the Stan State Warriors 3-0. Stan State will finish out its season long five-match home stand this Sunday, October 1 for an 11:30am CCAA match with Cal State East Bay on Latinx/Hispanic Appreciation Day at Warrior Stadium.
FIRST HALF: Stan State (3-5, 0-1 CCAA) looked like it was going to take the lead in the ninth minute when
Finn Hoffmann's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Cougars' Jesus Mentado. They had another chance in the 16
th minute, but
Edgar Castaneda's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Cougars' keeper. Seven minutes later, Cal State San Marcos took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Kian Aminloo off a corner kick by Nomar Ibarra. The Cougars had a chance to double their lead in the 34
th minute, but
Sebastian Castellanos made one of his four saves in the half as the match went into the half with CSUSM leading 1-0.
SECOND HALF: Cal State San Marcos (4-3-1, 1-0 CCAA) doubled its lead on a Vincent Saldivar penalty kick in the 51
st minute.
Ryan Rosas had a chance to cut into the Cougar lead, but his shot attempt sailed to the right of the goal in the 61
st minute. With 20 minutes left in the match, Ryan Meinardus scored the Cougars' third goal off a pass from EB Chinne to increase the guests' lead to 3-0. The Warriors had on last chance to cut into the Cougar lead when
Julian Madrigal shot was stopped by the Cougars' keeper in the final seconds as the guests took the match 3-0.
STATS: Cal State San Marcos out-shot the Warriors 17-5 including 10-4 in shots on goal. Jesus Mentado had four saves in goal for the Cougars.
Sebastian Castellanos had four saves in goal in the first 45 minutes while giving up a goal for the hosts.
Robby Rosas had three saves in the final 45 minutes and gave up two goals for Stan State.
UP NEXT: Stan State will finish out its five-match home stand with a 11:30am starting match with Cal State East Bay this Sunday, October 1 on Latinx/Hispanic Appreciation Day. The Pioneers match at No. 2 Chico State was suspended with eleven minutes left in the first half. The two teams will make-up the match later this season.
