TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State's rally fell short this evening in its 2023 CCAA opener as the Warriors lost 2-1 to the visiting Cal State San Marcos Cougars at Warrior Stadium. The Cougars scored on a penalty kick in the fifth minute. Stan State tied the match in the 22
nd on a goal by
Haylee Heffner, but the Cougars scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 27
th minute on a goal by Nani Kia'aiana.
FIRST HALF: The Cougars took advantage on a Warrior foul in the box in the fifth minute when Diana Mendoza connected on the penalty kick to give the guests the 1-0 lead.
Alexis Brewah had a chance to tie the match in the sixth minute as Allison Marcure stopped the Warrior shot on goal attempt. Stan State (3-4-1, 0-1 CCAA) had two chances in the next ten minutes to tie the match but
Daisy Martinez and
Shauna Johnston sailed over the goal. The Warriors did tie the match in the 22
nd minute on a goal by
Haylee Heffner off a ball by Brewah. They had a chance for the lead in the 23
rd minute when
Sunny Mancilla's shot on goal was stopped by the guests' keeper. Two minutes later, Cal State San Marcos (4-2-1, 1-0 CCAA) took the 2-1 lead on a gol by Nani Kia'aiana on a cross from Hannah Ramos. Brewah saw her chance to tie the match for the hosts be stopped by Marcure in the 35
th minute. In the final seconds of the half,
Jocelyn Lopez had a chance to tie the match when the ball sailed left of the goal to send the match into the second half with CSUSM leading 2-1.
SECOND HALF: The Warriors came out of the locker room with a surge, but both
Alexis Brewah and
Kaley Miller's shot on goal attempts to tie the match both were stopped by Marcure in the first six minutes of the half. CSUSM had a chance to increase its lead when
Natalia Ochoa stopped Diana Mendoza's attempt int eh 75
thminute.
Kaia Mills had a chance to tie the match for the hosts when Marcure recorded her seventh save in the 78
th minute. With four minutes left in the match,
Daisy Martinez's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Cougar keeper.
STATS: Stan State held an 8-5 shot on goal advantage, but the Cougars out-shot the Warriors 14-12. Allison Marcure had seven saves in goal for the Cougars.
Natalia Ochoa had three saves in goal for the hsots.
