SAN MARCOS, Calif.--- Stan State fell in a three-set nail-biting match (26-28, 23-25, 25-27) to the hosts, Cal State San Marcos Cougars in a CCAA match at The Sports Center on the campus of Cal State San Marcos, Calif.
Ellison Weaver led the way for the Warriors with her 11 kills to go with her nine digs.
FIRST SET: A
Kryslin James service ace gave the Warriors an early 5-3 to begin the match. The Cougars took a 10-7 lead on a Trinity Barr kill. Stan State recorded six of the next eight points capped by a solo block by
Alex Byrd and a Byrd kill off a
Haley Burdo assist to take a 13-12 lead. Back-to-back
Samaya Royal blocks increased the Warrior lead to 19-16. A service ace by
Rein Bocage increased the guests' lead to 24-21. Cal State San Marcos (6-8, 4-2 CCAA) recorded the next three points to tie the match at 24-24. An
Emily Vander Weide kill tied the set at 26-26, but the Cougars took the first set, 28-26, as back-to-back kills by Alyssa Gurrola and Sofia Hedqvist gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the match.
SECOND SET: Cal State San Marcos took a 9-4 lead in the second set on a Gracie Beilby service ace. The Warriors came back and took a 17-14 lead keyed by two
Mariah Iosua kills. Back-to-back kills by
Isabella Saucedo and
Emily Vander Weide gave Stan State (6-8, 1-5 CCAA) a 19-16 lead. The guests took a 21-18 lead on back-to-back kills by Iosua and
Ellison Weaver off assists from
Haley Burdo and
Gabby Rawson. The Cougars recorded the next eight points capped by an Isabelle Bakken to take a 24-21 lead. A kill by
Alex Byrd and a
Gabby Rawson service ace cut the Warrior deficit to 24-23. The hosts finished off the set taking the final point on a Warrior service error, 25-23. With the win of the set, CSUSM took a 2-0 lead in the match.
THIRD SET: The Warriors took an early 8-4 lead in the third set keyed by two
Eyriana Eatmon service aces. The hosts cut the deficit to 11-10, but the Warriors increased their lead to 16-12 on a kill by
Ellison Weaver off an assist from
Haley Burdo. They increased their lead to 19-13 on a kill by
Isabella Saucedo off an Eatmon assist. A kill by
Mariah Iosua gave the Warriors a 22-19 lead. Cal State San Marcos recorded the next five points to take a 24-22 lead.
Emily Vander Weide's kill gave the Warriors back the lead, 25-24. The Cougars didn't go away as they took the final three points capped by a combined block by Alyssa Gurrola and Sofia Hedqvist to take the final set 27-25 and the match 3-0.
WARRIOR LEADERS: Ellison Weaver had 11 kills and nine digs to lead the way for Stan State.
Alex Byrd added eight kills and four blocks.
Autumn Kirby added four blocks and
Samaya Royal added three blocks.
Rein Bocage four service aces while
Eyriana Eatmon added two.
Haley Burdo had 19 assists and Eatmon had 11.
Gabby Rawson had 15 digs and Bocage added ten.
UP NEXT: Stan State will return to the road with a pair of matches on October 6 and 7. The Warriors will be at Hayward, Calif., for a 5pm match with Cal State East Bay on Friday, October 6. They will finish off their road trip with a 3pm match at Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on Saturday, October 7. Stan State will return home on Monday, October 9 for a 1pm match on Education Day with No. 17 Chaminade University.
