TURLOCK, Calif.--- The Stan State Warriors battled this afternoon with the reigning CCAA and NCAA Division II West Region Champions, Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes, in a conference match-up at The Fitz. CSUSB defeated the Warriors 72-62.
Dontrell Hewlett paced the Warriors with 15 points and
John Wade III chipped in 10 points for the hosts.
FIRST HALF: The beginning of the game was back and forth with Cal State San Bernardino (13-4, 8-3 CCAA) taking a 17-14 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Christopher Mitchell mid-way through the quarter. The Coyotes increased their lead to 22-18 on a Mitchell free throw.
Dontrell Hewlett's lay-up gave Stan State a 23-22 lead with a little under six minutes left in the half. Hewlett's two free throws increased the hosts' lead to 28-25. CSUSB came right back and took a 30-28 lead at the 1:29 mark of the half.
Jonathan Tchengang's trey off a Came Walker pass gave the hosts back the lead 31-30, but Jalen Flanagan's jumper gave CSUSB the 32-31 lead heading into the half.
SECOND HALF: Once again, the beginning of the new stanza went back and forth with Stan State (5-12, 2-9 CCAA) took a 37-35 lead on a
Jonathan Tchengang dunk off a pass from
Dontrell Hewlett just three minutes into the half. CSUSB outscored the Warriors 24-8 in the next nine minutes to take a 59-43 lead. The Warriors didn't go away as
Jeremiah Jones' two free throws capped a 13-4 run by the hosts as they cut the deficit to 63-56 with just 4:36 left in the game. Jalen Flanagan's lay-up increased the Coyotes' lead to double digits (67-56) at the 3:06 mark of the half. Hewlett's lay-up capped a 6-0 Warrior run as they cut the deficit to 68-62 with 1:42 on the clock. CSUSB finished the game scoring the final four points to take the 72-62 victory.
BLOCK THAT SHOT: Stan State had five blocked shots this afternoon with
Dontrell Hewlett and
Daniel Ameyaw each with two.
Tony Singleton blocked one shot.
23-4: The Warriors' bench outscored CSUSB's bench 23-4 led by
Jeremiah Jones' eight points.
Micah Boone added seven points with
Cam Walker scoring six points and
Tony Singleton with two points.
13-for-17: The hosts just missed four of their attempts from the charity stripe this afternoon going 13-for-17. Four Warriors were perfect from the line in
Jeremiah Jones (four-for-four),
Dontrell Hewlett (three-for-three),
Micah Boone (three-for-three) and
Daniel Ameyaw (two-for-two).
UP NEXT: Stan State starts the second half of conference season with two road games in the Bay Area. The Warriors will face the SF State Gators this Thursday, Jan. 25 in San Francisco and the Cal State East Bay Pioneers in Hayward this Saturday, Jan. 27. Both games have 7:30pm scheduled tip-off times. Stan State defeated the Gators 70-65 on Dec. 2 in Turlock. The Warriors lost 86-76 to the Pioneers at home on Nov. 30.
