TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State held SF State to just 23% shooting from the field including 18% from the three-point land while forcing 20 turnovers to key its 55-30 road victory.
Asha Walker had a game high 14 points and
Aunika Hornung and
Mya Blake each chipped in 10 points.
FIRST QUARTER: An
Asha Walker three off an assist from
Aunika Hornung gave the Warriors an early 8-4 lead in the first five minutes of the quarter.
Joia Armstrong's free throw with 43 seconds left in the quarter increased Stan State's lead to 10-4 heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Stan State (12-10, 7-5 CCAA) increased its lead to 17-5 on a
Taylor Pilot free throw four minutes into the new quarter. Twice in the next two minutes, the Warriors increased their lead to 14 (23-9) including on an
Asha Walker at the 3:54 mark of the second quarter. San Francisco State (4-13- 3-9 CCAA) finished the quarter outscoring its visitors 9-4 to cut the Gators' deficit to 27-18 heading into the second half.
THIRD QUARTER: The Warriors came out on fire to begin the third quarter and went on a 16-4 run to take a 43-22 with a little less than three minutes to go in the quarter. Alexsandria Alvarado's free throws cut the Warrior lead to 43-25 heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Once again, Stan State went on a run to begin the quarter this time an 8-3 run to increase its lead to 51-28 on a
Mya Blake fast-break lay-up with four minutes left in regulation. Stan State's final points came on four free throws (two each) by
Talia Maxwell and
Lyric Richardson to take the 55-30 road victory.
THIRD STRAIGHT: Asha Walker recorded her third straight game in double digits with her game high 14 points. This ties her season high for points in a game. She grabbed six rebounds which tied her season high in 25 minutes.
SERIES SWEEP: With the victory this evening, the Warriors swept the season series from the Gators. Stan State defeated the Gators 77-72 earlier this season in Turlock. This is first time since the 2019-20 season that the Warriors swept the season series. That season, Stan State won 53-47 on Dec. 15, 2019, in San Francisco and 102-50 in Turlock on Feb. 15, 2020.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: The Warriors won the battle of the boards this evening 46-27.
Aunika Hornung and
Joia Armstrong each had seven rebounds.
Lyric Richardson and
Asha Walker each grabbed six rebounds while
Talia Maxwell had five rebounds.
DEFENSE: Stan State held the Gators to just 23% shooting from the field including 18% from three-point land. The Warriors forced 20 turnovers by SF State with 13 coming off steals.
Mya Blake and
Joia Armstrong each had four steals.
Asha Walker and
Taylor Pilot each had two.
ALL ALONE IN FOURTH PLACE: The Warriors are all alone in fourth place in the CCAA standings with their 7-5 conference record. They are one game out of second place (Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State) and three games out of first place (Cal State San Marcos). Stan State is one game ahead of Sonoma State, Cal State LA, Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly Humboldt and Cal State Dominguez Hills who are tied for fifth place each at 6-6.
UP NEXT: Stan State will return to the court this Saturday, January 27 for a 5:30pm tip-off with Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 60-58 this evening in Hayward. Earlier this season, the Warriors defeated Cal State East Bay 69-46 in Turlock on Nov. 30, 2023.
