HAYWARD, Calif.--- Stan State led 70-66 late in the overtime period, but Cal State East Bay scored the final six points all by Peyton Sterk to take the 72-70 CCAA victory at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward, Calif.
Mya Blake led the Warriors with 23 points while
Asha Walker chipped in 16 points and
Talia Maxwell added 12 points.
FIRST QUARTER: Back-to-back treys by
Asha Walker and
Mya Blake gave Stan State an early 6-0 lead in the first minute of the game.
Taylor Pilot's jumper off a steal by Pilot increased the guests' lead to 14-4 mid-way through the quarter. Peyton Sterk's trey capped a 14-2 run by Cal State East Bay (9-11, 7-6 CCAA) as the hosts cut the Warrior lead to 18-16 with two minutes left in the quarter. Stan State scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 22-16 lead into the second quarter
SECOND QUARTER: Brooke Donnelly's jumper gave the Pioneers a 23-22 lead in the first two and half minutes of the second quarter. Twice in the next three minutes the Warriors took a three-point lead including at the 5:41 mark on a trey by
Mya Blake. Cal State East Bay took a 35-32 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Kayla Rosemon with two minutes left in the half. The Warriors outscored their hosts 7-2 in the final minutes of the half to take a 39-37 lead into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER: The first couple minutes of the third quarter were even until Peyton Sterk's trey gave the hosts a 50-45 lead. Stan State cut the deficit to 52-49 on a lay-up by
Taylor Pilot off a steal by
Kalyn Harris heading into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: In the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Stan State outscored the Pioneers 9-2 capped by two
Talia Maxwell free throws as the Warriors took a 58-54 lead. Cal State East Bay wouldn't go away as the Pioneers went on an 8-2 run of their own to take a 62-60 lead with just 98 seconds left in regulation.
Taylor Pilot's free throw cut the hosts' lead to 62-61 with just 28 ticks on the clock. Lailah Carey was fouled and went one-for-two from the line as East Bay took a 63-61 lead. The game went into overtime as
Joia Armstrong's jumper sent the game into the extra period, tied at 63-63.
OVERTIME: Taylor Pilot's free throw at the 2:17 mark of the overtime gave Stan State a 67-63 victory. A free throw by Kayla Rosemon cut the Warrior lead to 67-64. Twice in the next minute, the Warriors increased their lead to four including 70-66 on two free throws by
Mya Blake with 28 seconds on the clock. A trey by Payton Sterk cut the Warrior lead to just one (70-69). Stan State had a chance to increase its lead, but the Warriors missed both free throws. CSUEB's Sterk was fouled on the Pioneer possession and gave the hosts a 71-70 lead at the 19 second mark of the overtime period. Stan State missed its opportunity to retake the lead as the Warriors missed a lay-up and Sterk grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled. She went one-for-two from the line to increase the Pioneer lead to 72-70. With the clock winding down, the Warriors had one last chance to tie the game but it fell shot as the hosts took the 72-70 victory.
TIED FOR FOURTH PLACE: With the loss at Cal State East Bay this evening, the Warriors fall into a tie for fourth place with the Pioneers each with a 7-6 CCAA record. They are two games out of second place (Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State each at 9-4). Cal State San Marcos is in first with a 11-2 CCAA mark. The Warriors and CSUEB are one game out of sixth place which is held by Sonoma State, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal Poly Humboldt, and Cal State San Bernardino.
FOURTH GAME OF 20-PLUS: Mya Blake recorded her fourth game of the season by scoring 20 points or more. This evening, she scored 23 points and dished out four assists and had six steals. She has scored in double digits in every game but four games.
SEASON HIGH WALKER: Asha Walker scored a season high 16 points this evening in Hayward. She was five-for-eleven from the field including four-of-eight from beyond the arc. Walker recorded four steals and grabbed one rebound. She has scored in double figures in the Warriors' last four games.
25 POINTS ON 23 TO'S: Stan State scored 25 points off 23 turnovers by Cal State East Bay. Of those 23 turnovers, 18 came on steals.
Mya Blake had six steals with
Asha Walker recording four and
Taylor Pilot three.
Kalyn Harris had two steals with the trio of
Aunika Hornung,
Lyric Richardson, and
Jadyn Patterson each recording one.
50-37: The Warriors outrebounded their hosts 50-37 led by
Aunika Hornung's season high 12 rebounds.
Talia Maxwell added nine rebounds.
Lyric Richardson and
Mya Blake each grabbed four rebounds and
Joia Armstrong and
Taylor Pilot had three.
BACK HOME TO THE FITZ: The Warriors return home to The Fitz for a pair of CCAA games on February 1 and 3. They will host Cal State Los Angeles on Thurs., Feb. 1 at 5:30pm and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sat., Feb. 3 at 1pm. Saturday's game will be the Warriors' Cancer Awareness Game along with Jessica's House Appreciation Day.
