Behind a Total Team Effort, Warriors Defeat Cal State East Bay 79-73

 
HAYWARD, Calif.---  Stan State used a total team effort while the Warriors' bench outscored Cal State East Bay's 41-13 to key their 79-73 road victory over the Pioneers.  Micah Boone paced the Warriors with a career high 24 points in 20 minutes off the bench.  John Wade III and Dontrell Hewlett each chipped in 14 points and Jonathan Tchengang added 11 points for the victors.
 
FIRST HALF:  Jonathan Tchengang's lay-up off a pass from Mahda Fallay gave the Warriors an early 8-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game.  Stan State increased its lead to 13-6 on a fastbreak dunk by Jeremiah Jones off a pass from Jeremiah Jones.  Mid-way through the half, the Warriors' Micah Boone was fouled and connected on all three free throws to give the visitors a 20-13 lead.  Chris James' lay-up capped a 16-7 run by the Pioneers as they took a 29-27 lead with just 3:42 left in the half.  Another Wade dunk off a pass from Jones tied the game at 33-33 at the 47 seconds mark of the half.  Cal State East Bay (12-7, 8-5 CCAA) took a 35-33 lead into the locker room on a Grady Lewis lay-up.
 
SECOND HALF:  The hosts increased their lead to 52-44 six minutes into the new stanza on a Dimitrios Klonaras' jumper.  Twice in the next three minutes, the Pioneers held a nine-point lead including 57-48 at the eleven-minute mark of the second half.  Micah Boone's trey off a pass from Dontrell Hewlett capped a 14-2 run by the Warriors as they took a 62-59 victory with 6:34 left in regulation.  Twice in the next four minutes, Stan State (6-13, 3-10 CCAA) increased its lead to seven including 70-63 on two John Wade III free throws.   Tyree Campbell's lay-up cut the Warrior lead to 75-70 with just 24 seconds left in regulation.  The Warriors went six-for-eight from the line including Hewlett going four-for-six as they took the 79-73 road victory.
 
41-13:  Stan State's bench outscored the Pioneer bench 41-13.  Micah Boone had a career high 22 points as he went six-for-ten from the field including three-for-five from beyond the arc and seven-for-eight from the line.  Dontrell Hewlett added 14 points, Jeremiah Jones' three points, and Will Chavarin chipped in two points.
 
BALANCED SCORING:  Four Warriors scored in double digits this evening led by Micah Boone's 24 points.  Dontrell Hewlett and John Wade III each added 14 points and Jonathan Tchengang chipped in a season high 11 points.
 
24/17:  Stan State scored 24 points off the Pioneers' 17 turnovers.  Of those 17 came on 12 steals by the Warriors.  John Wade III and Jonthan Tchengang each had three steals.  Six Warriors had one steal apiece in Mahda Fallay, Cam Walker, Micah Boone, Dontrell Hewlett, Jeremiah Jones, and Will Chavarin
 
BACK HOME TO THE FITZ:  The Warriors return home to The Fitz for a pair of CCAA games on February 1 and 3. They will host No. 25 Cal State Los Angeles on Thurs., Feb. 1 at 7:30pm and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sat., Feb. 3 at 3pm.  Saturday's game will be the Warriors' Cancer Awareness Game along with Jessica's House Appreciation Day.
