Men’s Basketball’s Rally Falls Short in Five-Point Loss to Golden Eagles

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State saw its late second half rally fall short in an 88-83 loss to Cal State Los Angeles (15-5, 10-4 CCAA) this evening at The Fitz.  John Wade III scored a game high 23 points to lead the way for the Warriors.  Mahda Fallay recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Dontrell Hewlett added 12 points and Jeremiah Jones chipped in season high 12 points off the bench for the hosts.
 
FIRST HALF:  in the first nine minutes of the game, Cal State Los Angeles (15-5, 10-4 CCAA) took a 20-6 lead on a Shane Bell jumper.  Will Chavarin's old-fashioned three-point play off a Micah Boone pass cut the Warrior deficit to 24-17 at the 9:43 mark of the first half.  The Golden Eagles came right and went on a 14-2 run capped by an Eche Okeke jumper with just four minutes to go in the half.  A Bell trey increased the visitors' lead to 44-24, but a Mahda Fallay lay-up cut the Golden Eagle lead to 44-26 heading into the locker room.
 
SECOND HALF:  A John Wade triple cut the Warrior deficit to 49-37 just three minutes into the new half.  Shane Bell's jumper increased the Golden Eagle lead to 54-37.  Stan State (6-14, 3-11 CCAA) didn't go away as the Warriors trimmed the Golden Eagle lead to 54-44 on a Dontrell Hewlett lay-up.  Cal State Los Angeles once again increased its lead to 69-48 mid-way through the half.  The Golden Eagles held an 80-61 lead with just six minutes left in the half.  Stan State came right back and went on a 18-2 run capped by a John Wade III three off a pass from Hewlett with 2:26 on the clock.  CSULA increased its lead to 86-81 a the 1:21 mark of the half on a Eche Okeke ly-up, but Mahda Fallay's tip-in made it an one-possession game with just 49 seconds to go in the game.  The Golden Eagles missed their shot on their next possession, but the Warriors' attempt to tie the game fell short.  Corey Cofield's free throw sealed the 88-83 victory for the Golden Eagles. 
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Mahda Fallay had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds (seven offensive) this evening.  This was his first double-double of his career.  He was four-for-four from the field and three-for-four from the line to go with his one blocked shot.
 
SECOND: John Wade III had his second twenty-point game this evening scoring a game high 23 points.  Wade went eight-for-12 from the field including four-of-seven from three-point land and three-of-five from the line.  He added two assists and a steal with six rebounds. 
 
15/13:  Stan State had 15 assists and just 13 turnovers.  Dontrell Hewlett and Tony Singleton each had three to lead the way.  Mahda Fallay, John Wade III, and Jonathan Tchengang each had two assists.
 
17/20:  The Warriors were 17-for-20 from the charity stripe.  Dontrell Hewlett was a perfect eight-of-eight while Micah Boone, Jeremiah Jones, and Will Chavarin each were one-for-one. 
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State will host No. 22 Cal State Dominguez Hills this Saturday, February 3 at 3pm. The Toros defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 83-82 this evening in Seaside. Earlier this season in Carson, the Toros defeated Stan State 65-63.  This will be Jessica's House Appreciation Day/Cancer Awareness Game for the Warriors.
