Stan State Sweeps Chico State at Home

TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stanislaus State (13-4, 6-3 CCAA) played our Education Day match against Chico State (6-10, 3-6 CCAA) this afternoon, winning the match 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23), and making this the fastest the Warriors have made it to 13 wins in program history. Walter Brown Elementary and the 5th/6th grade volleyball team from Turlock Christian School joined us for the match, ensuring the stands were filled and the cheers were loud.

FIRST SET: Over the deafening cheers of the elementary students, the two teams struggled to find a foothold, with the score tying four times before the score had reached 15 total points. Stan State began to pull away, causing Chico State to take the first timeout of the match at 10-7. The Warriors refused to be stopped with kills from Makenna Carrillo, Malia Tanksley, and Isabella Saucedo, as well as six blocks across the team, quickly closed out the set 25-14.

SECOND SET: Stan State came out strong in the second set with service aces from Haley Burdo and Gabby Rawson. After a familiar scenario where Chico State called timeout at 11-7, Ellison Weaver went on to serve three more aces for the Warriors, which, combined with a handful of kills, brought the Warriors to a 20-11 lead. From there, Isabella Saucedo recorded three kills to finish the set 25-16.

THIRD SET: Chico State opened the third set with a three-point run, which the Warriors had difficulty responding to. This eventually caused the Wildcats to be up 8-4, but Stan State began to regain their composure and took a 10-9 lead that included two service aces from Autumn Kirby. Both teams began the climb to take the set, with the score remaining close, and Stan State was able to keep their lead to end the set and match 25-23.

POWER HITTERS: Isabella Saucedo and Makenna Carrillo commanded the match, with Saucedo leading the team in kills with 13 and Carrillo recording 8 of her own. Carrillo also had two blocks and Saucedo had one, all three contributing to the team's seven blocks for the match.

UP NEXT: Stan State will travel to Chico on Friday, October 18th to play Chico State at the Art Acker Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m. The next week, the Warriors will host #6 Cal Poly Pomona at the Fitzpatrick Arena for a 5:00 p.m. match on Friday, October 25th for our Dig Pink Match.
