Men’s Soccer Plays to a 1-1 Draw with No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona

TURLOCK, Calif.---   Stan State finished the weekend 1-0-1 and picked up four points after a 1-1 draw with No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona on Senior Day this afternoon at Warrior Stadium.  With the tie, Stan State is one point out of the sixth and final spot for the six-team CCAAA Soccer Championships which start on November 10.  Elio Corral scored the Warriors' goal on a cross from Alexis Ramirez in the 29th minute.

FIRST HALF:  Both teams came out firing early in the first half.  Cal Poly Pomona (8-1-5, 3-0-4 CCAA) had a chance for the lead when Angel Ruiz-Hernandez stopped Jacob Singh's shot on goal attempt in the first minute.  Then thirty-three seconds later, the Broncos' Luke Garciduenas stopped the Warriors' Elio Corral' shot on goal attempt.  Stan State had another chance for the match's' first goal when Edgar Castaneda's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the Broncos' keeper.  Singh recorded another shot on goal attempt, but once again the Warrior keeper came up with the save in the 15th minute.  Stan State was called for a foul in the box with 14:55 on the clock and Max Laguna connected on the penalty kick to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.  The Broncos didn't hold on to the lead long as in the 29th minute, Elio Corral connected on a cross from Adrian Yepez to tie the match at 1-1 for the hosts.  With four minutes left in the half, the Broncos had a chance to retake the lead be stopped by Ruiz-Hernandez as the match went into the half tied at 1-1. 

SECOND HALF:  It looked like the Broncos were going to take the lead in the 65th minute when Mike Moser's shot was stopped by Angel Ruiz-Hernandez.  Stan State (6-4-4, 2-2-3 CCAA) had a chance for the lead when Edgar
Castaneda's two shot went wide of the goal in the 73rd minute.  With ten minutes left in regulation, Jacob Ramirez chance to be the hero for the Warriors was stopped by Luke Garciduenas.  Cal Poly Pomona had the final shot on goal attempt of the match in the 82nd minute when Stan State's Justin Aparicio stopped Woody Angell's shot on goal attempt.  Neither team had a shot on goal attempt in the final minutes as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. 

ONE POINT OUT: With three matches left in the regular season, Stan State is just one point out of the sixth and final spot for the 2024 CCAA Soccer Championships.  The Warriors have ten points with Cal State East Bay ahead them in sixth with eleven.  The top five spots are held by Cal State Los Angeles (16), Cal State Dominguez Hills (16), Chico State (15), Cal Poly Pomona (14), and Cal State Monterey Bay (14).  The top six teams in the regular season standings after November 7th will receive a berth to the 2024 CCAA Soccer Championships.

3/2:  Elio Corral scored his third goal of the season today which proved to the tying goal in the 1-1 draw with No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona.  Alexis Ramirez had his second assists on Corral's goal. 

SENIOR DAY:  Prior to the match today., the Warriors recognized their seniors in Daniel Avalos, Marco Carbajal, Edgar Castaneda, Elio Corral, Alecxander Cuellar, Leonardo Muniz, Alexis Ramirez and Ryan Rosas.

UP NEXT:  The Warriors will be at Cal State San Marcos for a 3:00 p.m. starting match with the Cougars in San Marcos, Calif., on Friday, November 1.  Stan State will travel to Hayward, Calif., for its final road game on Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. against Cal State East Bay.  The Warriors will return home for their final regular season match on Thursday, November 7 at 2:00 p.m. against Chico State.
