TURLOCK, Calif.--- With its 1-0 shutout victory at home over Cal Poly Humboldt, Stan State advances to the CCAA Championship Tournament Semi-finals presented by FloCollege this Friday, November 15.
Makeila Yancey scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 43
rd minute. The Warriors will face No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona this Friday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. at College Creek Field in Arcata, Calif., on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt.
FIRST HALF: Stan State (10-7-2) had the match's first chance to take the 1-0 lead in the 19
th minute when
Shauna Johnston's shot was stopped by Humboldt's Carson Thomson-Terrel. The Warriors had another chance eight minutes later when Humboldt's keeper stopped
Aliah Avila's shot on goal attempt. Cal Poly Humboldt recorded its first shot on goal attempt with fourteen minutes left when Heidie Munoz's attempt was stopped by the Warriors'
Tylin Norman. The Warriors took the 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by
Makeila Yancey with three minutes left in the half.
SECOND HALF: Cal Poly Humboldt (8-8-3) came out of the half recording two shot attempts in the first eleven minutes with the second coming off Emilie Wallin's foot going wide right in the 54
th minute.
Tylin Norman made her second save of the day stopping Heidie Munoz's shot on goal attempt in the 68
th minute. The Warriors had a chance to double their lead in the 84
th minute when
Kayla Perez's shot attempt was stopped by Carson Thomson-Terrel. Humboldt had one last chance to tie the match in the 84
th minute when Megan Janikowski's shot went right of the goal as the Warriors took the 1-0 victory.
GAME-WINNING GOAL: Makeila Yancey scored her first game-winning goal of the season with three minutes left in the first half. This was her first of her career as a Warrior. She now is the third player on Stan State's team with a game-winning goal.
Aliah Avila has seven game-winners and
Shauna Johnston has two.
DEFENSE: Stan State posted its seventh shutout of the season this afternoon in the First Round of the CCAA Soccer Championship Tournament. The Warriors held the 'Jacks to just eight shot attempts including two on goal.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will be heading to Arcata, Calif., to participate in the CCAA Semi-finals this Friday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m., when they face No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona at College Creek Field on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt. The winner of that match will face the winner of Cal State East Bay-Cal State Monterey Bay in the championship final match on Sunday, November 17 at 11:00 a.m. The tournament winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Division II Championships.
