TURLOCK, Calif.--- After finishing the regular season 9-7-2 including 6-5 in the CCAA this afternoon, Stan State finished in fourth place and will host Cal Poly Humboldt this Sunday, November 10 at noon in the First Round of the 2024 CCAA Women's Soccer Championships at Warrior Stadium on the campus of Stanislaus State. The Warriors went 6-2 in their last eight games of the season with a streak of four straight shutouts.
FIRST HALF: Stan State (9-7-2, 6-5 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in the first fifteen minutes of the match. The hosts' first goal came off the foot of
Sabrina Cabrera for her fourth goal of the season. Five minutes later, the Warriors doubled their lead when
Kaley Miller connected on a ball from
Jocelin Roa for her second goal of the season.
Tylin Norman made the first of her three saves of the day stopping Madison Schuler's shot in the 20
th minute. Chico State cut the Warriors' lead in half when Avery Pieri scored her seventh goal of the season in the 29
th minute. Hannah Pieri saw her chance to tie the match at 2-2 in the 41
st go wide right of the goal to send the match in the half with Stan State leading 2-1.
SECOND HALF: The Warriors had a chance to increase their lead to 3-1, but Claire Schabel stopped
Sabrina Cabrera's shot on goal attempt in the 50
th minute. Forty-two seconds later, Chico State tied the match on a penalty kick by Avery Pieri. The Warriors'
Haylee Sousa's chance to take the lead back was stopped by the Wildcat keeper in the 54
th minute. Chico State (6-6-6, 3-5-3 CCAA) took the 3-1 lead in the 81
st minute when Natalie Mendoza connected on a ball from Gabby Starr. With less than minutes left in the match, the Wildcats took a 4-2 lead when Jiana Martin connected on a pass from Brynn Howard as Chico State took the 4-2 victory.
FOURTH PLACE: For the second consecutive season, the Warriors finished in fourth place in the CCAA regular season standings. They will host Cal Poly Humboldt in the First Round of the CCAA Soccer Championships this Sunday, November 10 at noon. The winner will advance to the CCAA Semi-finals to face the number one seed Cal Poly Pomona at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15 in Arcata, Calif., at College Creek Field on the campus of Cal Poly Humboldt.
TENTH TIME: Stan State will make its tenth appearance in the CCAA Soccer Championships this Sunday afternoon.. The Warriors lost in the First Round last season 2-1 to Cal Poly Humboldt in overtime. Two years ago, Stan State lost 1-0 to Cal State Los Angeles in the CCAA semi-finals. In 2019, Stan State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 in overtime in the semi-finals and lost to No. 10 Sonoma State 2-1 in the final.
