TURLOCK, Calif.--- This afternoon's series finale between Stan State and the visiting Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks ended in a 12-12 after eight innings. The game was called due to the two teams' agreement ahead of time., so the Nighthawks can make their flight back to Idaho.
Alex Solis finished the game three-for-five with three runs batted in and a run scored. Solis drove in two runs including the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Chris Catalano had three hits and scored three times for the Warriors.
Stan State (2-2-1) took a 5-0 lead after one complete inning from Warrior Field.
Chris Catalano and
Robert Valdivia had back-to-back lead-off singles. Catalano scored the game's first run when
Kyle Rachels reached on a throwing error by NNU on his sacrifice bunt.
Alex Solis loaded the bases with a bunt single. Valdivia and Rachels each scored when
Flavio Perez reached on a Nighthawk fielding error. With two outs and the bases loaded,
Mac Cabero doubled home Solis and Perez to increase the hosts' lead to 5-0.
The score remained 5-0 until the Warrior half of the third. Perez had a lead-off double. He later scored on a perfect placed sacrifice bunt by
Jerry Nix.
Northwest Nazarene made it a game with a four-run fourth inning to cut the Warrior lead to 6-4. Quentin Ayers' two-out bases clearing double was the key hit in the inning as the Nighthawks took advantage of a Warrior error.
Stan State came right back and took an 8-4 lead after a two-run fourth.
Jacob Baker had a lead-off walk and went to second on a Catalano sacrifice bunt. Rachels walked with two outs. Solis drove home Baker with a single up the middle. Rachels came in to score on a run scoring single through the right side by Perez.
The Warriors added another run in the sixth inning. Catalano had a lead-off single and later scored on a two-out single by Rachels to increase the hosts' lead to 9-4.
Northwest Nazarene (3-1-1) tied the game with a five-run seventh inning. Cole Calnon had a lead-off bunt single and went to second when Ayers walked. With two outs, Manny Casillas walked to load the bases. Duke Paukoa hit a two-run single to bring in Calnon and Ayers. Casillas scored on a single to right field by Trevor Tishnenkel. Still with two outs, the Nighthawks tied the game at 9-9. on a Kaleb Karpenstein two-run single to center field.
The Warriors retook the lead, 10-9, in their half of the seventh. Perez drew a lead-off walk and was pinch ran for by
Cooper Winton who advanced to second on a
JD Madrigal sacrifice bunt. Winton scored at the time the go-ahead run on a pinch-hit single by
Jonluke Goldman.
The Nighthawks took their first lead of the game in their half of the eighth inning. Pinch hitter Adam Pagnelli reached base when he was hit by a pitch to lead-off the inning. He went to second on a Carter Walsh sacrifice bunt. Pagnelli scored on a double to left field by Casey Wayne. Wayne scored on a two-run home run to left field by Pahukoa to give NNU a 12-10 lead.
The hosts came right back and tied the game in their half of the eighth. Catalano had a lead-off single and went to second on a one-out single by Rachels.
Jackson Brooks came in to pinch run for Rachels. On the first pitch he saw, Solis tied the game on a two-run double to center field to tie the game at 12-12. With two outs, Warrior pinch hitter
Luke Davies walked to place the two go-ahead runs on first and second. Nighthawk reliever, Wade Duncan induced the next Warrior to fly out to right field to preserve the 12-12 tie.
The game was called at that time on a pre-game agreement as the Nighthawks needed to get to their flight back to Idaho.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Trent Huff started the game for Stan State and picked up the no-decision. He pitched four innings, giving up five hits and four unearned runs. Huff struck out two and walked one.
Caleb Bertoncini pitched two innings of relief, giving up no hits and striking out three.
Patrick Sweeney was the final Warrior pitcher to see action on the mound as he struck out the lone batter, he faced in the eighth.
STAN STATE HITTERS: The Warriors had 13 hits on the day with four players with multiple-hit games led by
Alex Solis (three-for-five, with a three runs batted in, and a run scored).
Chris Catalano was three-for-four with three runs.
Flavio Perez was two-for-three with two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Kyle Rachels was two-for-three with a run batted in and two runs scored.
UP NEXT: Stan State continues its 14-game home stand with a four-game non-conference series with Central Washington. The two teams will play a single game on Friday, Feb. 16 at 5pm, a doubleheader starting at 1pm on Saturday, Feb. 17. The series will conclude with a noon starting single game on Sunday, Feb. 18.
