Despite Talia Maxwell’s Season High of 16 Points, Warriors Fall at CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif.---  Stan State freshman Talia Maxwell scored a season high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Warriors' 76-59 road loss to Cal State San Marcos, who is leading the CCAA and is receiving votes nationally in the WBCA coaches' poll.  Mya Blake added 13 points for the Warriors, who will host Cal Poly Humboldt this Thursday, February 15 at 5:30pm in Stan State's Homecoming Game at The Fitz.
 
FIRST QUARTER:  Cal State San Marcos built an early 14-8 lead in the first six minutes of the quarter.  Back-to-back jumpers by Talia Maxwell and Mya Blake cut the Cougar lead to 14-12 in the next three minutes.  The hosts outscored the Warriors 7-3 in the final minutes of the quarter to take a 21-15 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
SECOND QUARTER:  A Liliana Marques trey off a Taylor Pilot assist cut the Warrior deficit to 21-18 early in the second quarter.  Cal State San Marcos (18-4, 15-2 CCAA) finished the quarter outscoring Sta State 16-9 to take a 37-27 lead into the half.
 
THIRD QUARTER:  Talia Maxwell's free throw cut the Warrior deficit to single digits, 37-28, to begin the new half.  Charity Gallegos' trey capped a 9-1 run by the hosts as they took a 46-29 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter.  Jadyn Patterson's jumper cut the Cougar lead to 46-34 mid-way through the third quarter.  The Cougars finished the quarter outscoring Stan State 12-7 to take a 58-41 lead heading into the final quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:  Natalie Nicolosi' lay-up increased CSUSM's lead to 72-50 with just three minutes left in regulation.  Stan State (13-14, 8-9 CCAA) finished the game outscoring its hosts 9-4 to make the final 76-59 CSUSM.
 
THREE-WAY TIE FOR SEVENTH:  After going 0-2 this weekend, Stan State is now in a three-way tie for seventh place with Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State.  The Warriors are one game out of fourth place (Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Cal State San Bernardino) with five games left in the regular season.  Holding the top three spots in the CCAA are Cal State San Marcos, Chico State, and Cal Poly Pomona.  Cal State East Bay is two-games out of fourth with its 7-10 record.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a bid to the CCAA Basketball Championships, March 7-9, at Cal State San Bernardino. The winner of the CCAA Basketball Championship Tournament will receive the conference's automatic bid the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship. 
 
MAXWELL: Talia Maxwell scored a career high 16 points this afternoon, she went five-for-13 from the field and six-of-10 from the line with one blocked shot. Maxwell added eight rebounds (three offensive).
 
13-STRAIGHT: Mya Blake has scored in double digits in 13 straight games after scoring 13 this evening.  She has scored in double figures in all but four games this season. 
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State will return to The Fitz this Thursday, Feb. 15 for a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal Poly Humboldt in the Warriors' Annual Homecoming Game.  The Warriors will host Chico State a week from today at 1pm.
