TURLOCK, Calif.--- The visiting fifth ranked Cal State San Marcos Cougars (8-1, 2-0 CCAA) took the first two games of the four-game series this afternoon 2-1 and 8-0 at the Warrior Softball Field. The two teams will conclude the weekend series with a noon starting doubleheader tomorrow at Stan State.
GAME ONE: Mackenzie Guiliano had a one-out bung single and stole second. With two outs, Aneesa Arredondo was hit by ap itch. Savannah Coyle drove in the game's first run on a single up the middle to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Cal State San Marcos doubled its lead in the fifth inning. Madison Waymire had a one-out double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Arredondo.
Stan State (0-7, 0-2 CCAA) cut the Cougar lead in half in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lauryn Serda had a lead-off bunt single. She went to second when Faith Erb reached on a Cougar Error. Serdq scored on a Mikaela Ferreira sacrifice fly to center field to make it CSUSM 2-1.
Coyle came in to pitch for the Cougars and retired the Warriors in order to preserve the 2-1 game one victory for the visitors.
STAN STATE HITTERS: Lauryn Serda had the Warriors' hit in game one while Mikaela Ferreria drove her in with a sacrifice fly.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Shelby Frutoz recorded the loss for Stan State. She pitched seven innings, giving up two runs and five hits while walking one and striking out one.
GAME TWO: Cal State San Marcos after a run in the first and second inning. The Cougars doubled their lead in fourth inning keyed by a two-run single by Lauren Deplitch. They added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Savannah Coyle's two-run two-out single in the sixth keyed the Cougars' two-run sixth inning. CSUSM added another run in the seventh for the 8-0 vicitory.
STAN STATE HITTERS: Marissa Cerda had the Warriors' two hits.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Victoria Alarcon (0-3) suffered the loss while striking out three. Sasha Martello pitched the final 1.1 innings of relief, giving up two hits and a run while striking out two.
UP NEXT: Stan State will continue its six-game home stand for a 3pm non-conference doubleheader with Simon Fraser this Tuesday, February 20.
