Toros Take Final Two Games of the Series from Stan State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Cal State Dominguez Hills swept today's doubleheader from the visiting Stan State Warriors 5-3 and 12-3 this afternoon at Toro Diamond in Carson, Calif.  The Warriors will return home to face Chico State in a four-game series March 1-2, beginning with a 2pm starting time doubleheader on Friday, March 1.
 
GAME ONE:  Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-3, 8-0 CCAA) took a 1-0 on a two-out run scoring single by Mariah Ramirez in the bottom of the first inning.  The Toros added two more on a two-out two-run home run by Mireya Rico in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Stan State (2-13, 1-7 CCAA) cut the deficit to 3-1 in its half of the third inning.  Jessica Gutierrez had a lead-off walk and scored on Sasha Martello's double down the left field line.  The Toros added another run in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 3-1.  
 
The Warriors once again came back in their half of the fourth.  Marissa Cerda had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice by Faith Erb.  She advanced to third on a single by Gutierrez who then stole second. With two outs, Shelby Frutoz walked to load the bases. Cerda scored on a bases loaded walk to Mikaela Ferreira.  Still with two outs, Gutierrez walked on a bases loaded walk to Sarah Warden to cut the Toro lead to 4-3.
 
The hosts added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single by Rico to make it 5-3 CSUDH.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS:  Sasha Martello, Mikaela Ferreira, and Jessica Gutierrez each had two hits for the Warriors.  Gutierrez scored twice with Martello, Ferreira, and Sarah Warden each driving in a run for Stan State.
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Sasha Martello (2-4) pitched six innings, giving up eights and five runs (four earned).
 
GAME TWO:  The Toros took a 1-0 lead in their half of the first inning.  Alexis Aguardo's two-out bases clearing triple gave the hosts a 4-1 lead after two complete.  
 
Mikaela Ferreira and Sarah Warden had to back-to-back lead-off singles in the top of the third.  With one out, Ferriera scored on a run scoring single by Karli DalBianco.  Katie Thornsberry doubled home Warden and DalBianco to cut the deficit to 4-3.
 
The Toros came back with three runs in their half of the third to take a 7-3 lead.  Jay Ross' three-run home run keyed a five-run fourth for the hosts as they took a 12-3 lead.  Stan State was shut down in its half of the fifth as the Toros took the night cap, 12-3.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS: Jessica Gutierrez had two of the Warriors' seven hits.  Five other Warriors had one hit apiece in Mikaela Ferreira, Sarah Warden, Karli DalBianco, Katie Thornsberry, and Faith Erb.
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Victoria Alarcon pitched a scoreless fourth inning in relief while striking out one.  Shelby Frutoz (0-6) and Sasha Martello each pitched for the Warriors in the first three innings.
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State will return home Friday-Saturday, March 1-2 for a four-game series with Chico State.  The series will begin with a 2pm starting doubleheader on Friday followed by noon starting doubleheader on Saturday.
