Sonoma State’s Late First Half Surge Keys Victory Over Warriors

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- Sonoma State used a late first half surge to key its 75-58 victory over the visiting Stan State Warriors.  Dontrell Hewlett paced the Warriors with 16 points to go with his five rebounds and four assists.  Stan State continues its road trip this Saturday, February 10 with a 3pm scheduled tip-off at Cal State San Marcos.
 
FIRST HALF:  Jeremiah Jones' jumper in the first two minutes of the game gave the Warriors an early 6-2 lead to begin the game.  Sonoma State (11-11, 7-9 CCAA) went on a 12-3 run capped by a Nick Medeiros' trey to take a 14-9 lead.  Twice in the next two minutes, the Warriors cut the Seawolf lead to just two including 17-15 after a Tony Singleton trey on a Will Chavarin assist.  Damien Miller's jumper capped a 19-2 run by Sonoma State as the hosts took a 36-17 lead with just three minutes left in the half.  Dontrell Hewlett's free throw cut the Seawolf lead to 36-21 heading into the locker room.
 
SECOND HALF:  Sonoma State outscored the Warriors 12-7 in the first six minutes of the half to take a 48-28 lead.  Julian Bryant's free throw increased the hosts' lead to 71-44 with six minutes left in regulation.  Dontrell Hewlett's jumper off a Tony Singleton assist capped a 12-0 run by the Warriors as they cut the deficit to 71-66 with 2:25 on the clock.  A Matt Williams III dunk increased Sonoma's lead to 79-56 with ninety seconds to go in the game.  Two Jeremiah Jones' free throw cut Stan State's deficit to 75-58 and that was the final.
 
12/18:  Stan State had 12 assists on 18 field goals made.  Dontrell Hewlett had a season high four assists to lead the Warriors.  Tony Singleton and John Wade III each had two assists and four Warriors had one assist each in Mahda Fallay, Cam Walker, Will Chavarin, and Baljot Sahi.
 
17-FOR-21:  Four Warriors didn't miss a free throw this evening in Jeremiah Jones (three-for-three), John Wade III (three-for-three), Will Chavarin (two-for-two), and Jonathan Tchengang (two-for-two).  Dontrell Hewlett was eeven-for-eight.
 
UP NEXT:  The Warriors will finish their two-game road trip this Saturday, February 10 in San Marcos for a 3pm contest with Cal State San Marcos.  The Cougars lost 70-64 to Cal State Monterey Bay this evening in San Marcos.  Stan State lost 71-42 earlier this season on January 4 in Turlock.
