SAN MARCOS, Calif.--- Cal State San Marcos outscored the Warriors 7-2 in the final 84 seconds to take the 80-75 CCAA victory at The Sports Center in San Marcos.
Dontrell Hewlett paced Stan State with 19 points while
Jeremiah Jones chipped in 14 points. The Warriors return to The Fitz this Thursday, February 15 for a 7:30pm game versus Cal Poly Humboldt in their annual Homecoming Game.
FIRST HALF: The Cougars built an early 14-9 lead in the first four minutes.
Dontrell Hewlett's trey off a
John Wade III assist capped an 8-2 run by Stan State as the Warriors took a 17-16 lead.
Micah Boone's three free throws with 9:07 left in the half gave the Warriors a 25-20 lead. Five minutes later, CSUSM's Max Tengan's trey cut the Cougar deficit to 30-28.
Jeremiah Jones lay-up increased the guests' lead to 36-30 at the 2:27 mark of the first half. Tengan's free throw cut Stan State's lead to 36-32. Stan State (6-17, 3-14 CCAA) finished the half on a 6-0 run capped by a
Cheikh Gueye tip-in at the buzzer to give the guests a 42-32 lead heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Jeremiah Jones' lay-up off a
Jonathan Tchengang steal increased the Warriors' lead to 48-36 just two minutes into the new half. The Cougars cut their deficit to 48-44 on a Uriah Foster free throw.
John Wade III gave the visitors a 51-44 lead at the 13:00 mark of the half. Foster cut the Warrior lead to just one possession on two free throws, 51-49. Stan State once again increased its lead to seven (56-49), this time on a
Cam Walker lay-up at the 10:41 mark. Cal State San Marcos (9-14, 8-9 CCAA) outscored the Warriors 16-4 in the next five minutes to take a 65-60 lead. An old-fashioned three-point play by Edwyn Collins increased the Cougars' lead to 68-62 with five minutes to go in regulation. Madha Fallay's lay-up off a
Jeremiah Jones' assist cut the Warrior deficit to 68-67. CSUSM took a 73-69 lead on a jumper by Collins with just three minutes to go in the game. Back-to-back jumpers by
Dontrell Hewlett tied the game at 73-73 with 84 seconds left in regulation. The Cougars outscored the Warriors 7-2 in the final 84 seconds of the game to take the 80-75 victory.
ONCE AGAIN: Stan State's bench outscored CSUSM's 26-16 led by
Cam Walker with nine points. He also grabbed six rebound in 20 minutes.
John Wade III added eight points and eight rebounds and
Micah Boone chipped in six points.
FOUR OF FIVE: Dontrell Hewlett has scored in double figures in four of the Warriors' last five games. He tied his season high with 19 points this evening. He went nine-for-12 from the field and made his only attempt from beyond the arc. Hewlett added four rebounds and two assists.
JJ: Jeremiah Jones has scored in double digits in the Warriors' last four games. This evening, he scored 14 points as he went six-of-12 from the field and a perfect two-for-two from the charity stripe. Jones added two steals and an assist for the Warriors.
CHEIKH: In his just his sixth game of the season,
Cheikh Gueye grabbed a season high seven rebounds including six defensive in 13 minutes off the bench. Gueye scored his first two points of the season on a tip-in to end the first half for Stan State.
UP NEXT: Stan State will return to The Fitz this Thursday, Feb. 15 for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal Poly Humboldt in the Warriors' Annual Homecoming Game. The Warriors will host Chico State a week from today at 3pm.
