ROHNERT PARK, Calif.---- Stan State's fourth quarter rally fell short this evening in a 46-44 road conference loss to Sonoma State at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park, Calif. With the loss, the Warriors fall into a five-way tie for fourth place with six games left in the regular season.
Mya Blake had a game high 19 points to lead the way for the Warriors.
Asha Walker chipped in 12 points.
FIRST QUARTER: Sonoma State (12-11, 7-9 CCAA) jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. An Alli McDonald lay-up increased the Seawolves' lead to 15-9 with just two minutes to go in the quarter.
Asha Walker's jumper cut the deficit to 16-11 with 23 seconds on the clock, but a Jayme Blackard free throw gave Sonoma a 17-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: The hosts scored the first four points of the new quarter to take a 21-11 lead.
Mya Blake's trey capped a 6-2 run by the Warriors as they cut the Seawolf lead to 23-17 at the 2:25 mark of the quarter. Sonoma scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 29-17 lead heading into the half.
THIRD QUARTER: Stan State (13-13, 8-8 CCAA) cut the deficit to eight (33-28) on an
Asha Walker jumper mid-way through the third quarter. The Seawolves increased their lead back to double digits, 37-25, on a lay-up by Trena Rathjen with two minutes left in the third.
Iman Addison's jumper cut the Warrior deficit to 37-27 headed into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: A trey by
Mya Blake off a
Taylor Pilot pass cut the Warrior deficit to 40-31 just three minutes into the final quarter. A jumper by Jayme Blackard gave Sonoma an 11-point lead (42-31), but the Warriors didn't go away. An
Asha Walker trey off a pass from
Joia Armstrong capped a 13-3 run by Stan State as the visitors cut the Seawolf lead to 45-44 with just 28 seconds to go in regulation. The Warriors fouled Blackard and she went one-for-two from the lien with just 26 seconds on the clock to give Sonoma State a 46-44 lead. Stan State had a chance to tie the game, but the Warriors' attempt fell short. Once again, the Warriors fouled the Seawolves but they missed both free throws to give Stan State one final chance. Once again (unfortunately), Stan State's final attempt fell short to tie the game as Sonoma State took the 46-44 victory.
FIVE-WAY TIE FOR FOURTH PLACE: With six games left in the regular season, Stan State is in a five-way tie for fourth place with Cal State Los Angeles, Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Cal State San Bernardino. Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay are tied for ninth place each at 7-9. The top three teams are Cal State San Marcos (14-2), Chico State (12-4), and Cal Poly Pomona (10-6). The top six teams at the end of the regular season receive a bid to the 2023-24 CCAA Basketball Championships, March 7-9 at Cal State San Bernardino.
DEFENSE: Stan State held the Seawolves to just 25.5% shooting from the field including 30.8% from three-point land. They held them to just 17 points in the second half. The Warriors forced 17 turnovers including 14 by steals (five each by
Mya Blake and
Taylor Pilot).
SEVENTH STRAIGHT GAME: Asha Walker recorded her seventh straight game scoring in double figures this evening with 12 points. She went five-for-11 from the field including two-of-four from three-point territory.
ALL BUT FOUR: Mya Blake has scored in double figures in all but four games this season. This evening, she had a game high 19 points as she went seven-for-21 from the field including five-of-nine from beyond the arc.
UP NEXT: Stan State travels to San Marcos this Saturday, February 10 for a 1pm contest with first place Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 68-56 this evening in San Marcos. Earlier this season, the Warriors lost 70-60 to the Cougars in Turlock.
