TURLOCK, Calif.--- The visiting Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks (3-1) took the first two games of this weekend's shortened three-game series with Stan State. The Warriors lost in the opener 4-0 and the night cap 7-3.
Jacob Baker had two hits, drove in two runs, and had a solo home run in the doubleheader for the hosts.
GAME ONE: The Nighthawks took an early 2-0 in its half of the first inning. Carter Walsh drew off a lead-off walk and stole second. Bryan Rojas was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and second with one out. With two outs, each Nighthawk runner advanced a base on a wild pitch. Both runners scored on a two-run single by Kailer Saunders.
The guests added a run in the top of the seventh to take a 3-0 lead. They added an insurance run in the ninth on a two-out run scoring single by Walsh as NNU increased its lead to 4-0.
NNU pitching duo of Jonathan Zayas (1-0) and Wade Duncan combined to pitch nine shutout innings, giving up just two hits, striking out eleven and walking just one Warrior. Duncan recorded his first save.
PITCHING: Tony Jacob (0-1) suffered the loss in the start for Stan State (2-2). He pitched four innings, giving up three hits and two runs, striking out three and walking three.
Noah Chelberg pitched the final five innings of relief, giving up four this and two runs (one earned), striking out two and walking two.
HITTING: Stan State managed just two hits one each by
Alex Solis and
Jerry Nix.
GAME TWO: Northwest Nazarene took a 4-0 lead with a four-run second on just two hits and three Warrior errors. The Nighthawks added another run in the top of the third inning on a two-out run scoring single by Kaleb Karpstein. They made it 6-0 on another run scoring single by Karpstein which drove in Trevor Tishenkel who reached on a double.
Stan State cut into the deficit, 6-1, on a one-out solo home run by
Jacob Baker in the bottom of the seventh.
NNU came back with an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-1 lead.
The Warriors scored two runs in their half of the eighth inning. With two outs,
Tyler Van Dyk hit a pinch hit double to left field. He scored on a double to center field by Baker.
Chris Catalano drove home Baker with the Warriors' third run on a single down the right field line to cut the NNU lead to 7-3.
Stan State was shut down in its half of the ninth as the Nighthawks took the night cap 7-3.
PITCHING: Will Crookham (0-1) suffered the loss in the start.

Damian Vallejos combined to pitch four innings of relief, giving up two hits and one unearned run while striking out four and walking two.
HITTING: Jacob Baker was two-for-three with two runs batted, a home run, and a double. Five other Warriors had a hit apiece in
Chris Catalano,
Robert Valdivia,
Kyle Rachels,
Flavio Perez, and
Tyler Van Dyk.
