SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.--- Stan State had the tying run up to bat in its last at bat, but Coyote starting pitcher Natalie Carlos induced the last Warrior batter to ground out to preserve the 7-4 Cal State San Bernardino victory.
Mikaela Ferreira had three of the Warriors' nine hits while driving in two runs and scoring once.
The series opener was scoreless until the Warrior half of the fourth.
Mikaela Ferreira and
Sasha Martello had back-to-back lead off singles. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch.
Sarah Warden's run scoring single gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead which brought in Ferreira. Stan State (6-14, 5-8 CCAA) doubled its lead to 2-0 on a two-out single through the left side by
Karli DalBianco which scored Martello.
Cal State San Bernardino (12-10, 9-6 CCAA) didn't let Stan State hold on to that lead for long as the Coyotes scored six runs in their half of the fourth inning keyed by a two-run one-out single by Sarah Moite. The Coyotes took a 6-2 lead into the final three innings of the game.
Stan State cut into the Coyote lead in its half of the fifth.
Lauryn Serda had a two-out single and scored on Ferreira double to left center to cut the Coyote lead to 6-3.
The Coyotes added an insurance run in their half of the fifth. Bri Goris had a lead-double and later scored on a two-out infield single by Hayden Green to increase the hosts' lead to 7-3.
The Warriors made it interesting in its last at bat. With one out,
Faith Erb doubled to left center and advanced to third on a ground out by
Jessica Gutierrez. Serda walked to place Warriors on the corners. Erb scored on a two-out double by Ferreira which cut the Warrior deficit to 7-4. CSUSB starting pitcher, Natatlie Carlos (3-2) induced the last Warrior to ground out to second to preserve the 7-4 Coyote victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had nine hits in the opener lead by Mikaela Ferreria's three-for-four day. Ferreira drove in two runs and scored a run.
Sarah Warden had two hits and a run batted in for Stan State. The Warriors had three doubles on the day two by Ferreira and one by
Faith Erb.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Victoria Alarcon (0-4) suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors.
Sasha Martello pitched 2.2 innings of relief, giving up four hits and two runs.
UP NEXT: Stan State will continue its series with the Coyotes tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader at San Bernardino. The first game of the series was called due to field conditions. The Warriors will return home to Warrior Field, March 21-24, when they host the 21
st Annual Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock. They will face Azusa Pacific (March 22, 11:30am), Central Washington (March 22, 4:30pm), Hawai'i Hilo (March 23, 4:30pm), and Dominican (March 24, noon).
