TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State went 2-0 in Day Two of the 21
st Annual Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock, with a 6-3 victory over Azusa Pacific and a 7-5 victory over Central Washington this afternoon at Warrior Field.
Shelby Frutoz and
Sasha Martello each picked victories and Martello recorded the save.
GAME ONE: Stan State took a 4-0 lead with a four-run second inning.
Marissa Cerda reached on throwing error and went to third on a
Katie Thornsberry single. She scored when Thornsberry stole second and went to third on an errant throw. Thornsberry later scored on a
Jessica Gutierrez ground to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. With two outs,
Lauryn Serda had a bunt single and went to second on a
Mikaela Ferreira infield single. They each scored on a two-run double by
Sasha Martello to double the Warriors' lead to 4-0.
Azusa Pacific (15-10) cut the Warrior lead in half with a two-run second inning. The Cougars added another run in its half of the sixth to draw within a run, 4-3. Stan State added two insurance runs in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Sasha Martello recorded her first save as she shut down the Cougars to preserve the 6-3 Warrior victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Mikaela Ferreira was two-for-three with two runs scored while
Sasha Martello was two-for-three and scored twice.
Katie Thornsberry had two hits and scored a run for the Warriors.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Shelby Frutoz (2-6) picked up the win in the start, pitching six innings, giving up five hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out one and walking two.
Sasha Martello pitched the final scoreless inning for the save.
GAME TWO: Central Washington (9-18) took a 5-0 lead with a five-run fourth inning. Stan State tied the game with a five-run fourth of its own.
Karli DalBianco had a one-out single, went to second on a
Marissa Cerda single. They each advanced on a
Katie Thornsberry bunt single. DalBianco scored on a
Faith Erb infield single.
Jessica Gutierrez's single brought in Cerda.
Lauryn Serda had a one-out two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-4. With two outs,
Sasha Martello singled home Gutierrez to tie the game a 5-5.
Stan State (9-15) took a 7-5 lead with a two-run fifth inning. DalBianco had a lead-off infield single. She went to second when Cerda reached on an error. With one out, Erb drove home both Warriors with a two-run single to give Stan State a 7-5 lead.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Sasha Martello (7-4) recorded the win, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up one hit and one unearned run.
Victoria Alarcon recorded the no-decision in the start for the Warriors.
STAN STATE HITTERS: Five Warriors had two hits apiece in
Jessica Gutierrez,
Lauryn Serda,
Mikaela Ferreira,
Karli DalBianco, and
Faith Erb. Serda drove in two runs and Erb had three runs batted in while DalBianco and
Marissa Cerda each scored twice.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will host Hawai'i Hilo tomorrow at 4:30pm and finish the tournament with a noon starting game on Sunday against Dominican.
