TURLOCK, Calif.--- Mac Cabero's two-out walk-off single drove in
JD Madrigal with the game-winning run in Stan State's 11-10 extra-inning victory over the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers. With the victory, the Warriors won the weekend series from the Pioneers 3-1.
Quinn Oliver (1-0) recorded his first win as a Warrior, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings while giving up no hits and striking out one.
Stan State (11-15-1, 7-11 CCAA) took a 3-0 lead with a three-run second inning.
Chris Catalano had a lead-off single and went to second on a passed ball. With two outs,
Mac Cabero walked. Catalano scored on a single to right center by
Jackson Brooks.
Robert Valdivia drove in Cabero and Brooks with a double to left center.
Brendan Bell's had a one-out triple and scored on a ground out by Luke Novitske to cut the Warrior lead to 3-1 in the top of the third inning.
The Warriors took a 9-1 lead with a six-run seventh inning. Valdivia had a lead-off solo home run to begin the inning. With one out,
Alex Solis had a single to left center and was pinch run for by
Cooper Winton. Winton then stole second and third.
Tyler Van Dyk drew a one-out walk and was pinch ran for by
Jacob Baker. Catalano drove in Winton with a single which Baker scored on a fielding error by East Bay. Stan State took an 8-1 lead on a three-run home run by
Flavio Perez to left field. The Warriors added a run on a solo home run to right field by
Luke Davies who pinch hit for
Jerry Nix.
Cal State East Bay (13-15, 5-11 CCAA) cut the Warrior lead to 9-7 with a six-run inning in its half of the eighth inning capped by a grand slam home run by Bell.
The Warriors made it 10-7 hosts in their half of the eighth inning. Winton had a two-out walk. He stole his third base of the game and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a pinch-hit two-out single by
JD Madrigal to give Stan State a 10-7 lead.
In their last at bat, Cal State East Bay tied the game at 10-10 to send the game into extra-innings. Jacob Klinovsky had a two-out pinch-hit two-run single to cap the three-run inning for the Pioneers.
The game remained tied until the Warrior half of the eleventh. Madrigal had a lead-off single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Catalano. With two outs, Cabero drove in Madrigal with a single through the right side as the Warriors took the 8-7 victory and the four-game series, 3-1.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had fifteen hits in the series finale.
Chris Catalano went three-for-five with a run batted in and two runs scored.
Robert Valdivia was two-for-six with three runs batted in, a run scored, a double and a home run.
JD Madrigal was two-for-two with two runs scored and a run batted in while
Mac Cabero was two-for-four with a run batted in and a run scored.
Flavio Perez and
Luke Davies each had home runs for the Warriors.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Tony Jacob recorded the no-decision in the start. He pitched six innings, giving up three hits and a run while striking out nine and walking two.
Quinn Oliver (1-0) picked up the win in relief, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out one.
UP NEXT: Stan State returns to the diamond for a four-game series in Rohnert Park, Calif., this Thursday-Saturday, March 28-30. The two teams will play a 2pm starting series opener on Thursday. They will continue the series with an 11am starting doubleheader on Friday. The series will finish this Saturday, March 30 with a single game at 11am. Stan State will face Stockton Ports in an exhibition game on April 3 at 6:30pm. The Warriors will return home, April 5-7, for a four-game series with Cal Poly Pomona.
