ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- Stan State hit three home runs and
Kody Cardoza pitched six scoreless innings of three-hit relief to key the Warriors' night cap 13-3 victory over Sonoma State this afternoon in Rohnert Park, Calif. The Seawolves took the opener, 5-2, behind the pitching duo of Blake Janowicz and Nik Klamages
GAME ONE: Sonoma State (13-14, 7-10 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead on Daniel Monti's two-out solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning. Stan State took a 2-1 lead after a two-run third inning.
Danny Murphy had a lead-off single, went to second on a walk to
Jackson Brooks.
Ryan Leonesio reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Murphy tied the game when he scored on a ground out by
Robert Valdivia.
The guests took a 2-1 lead when Brooks scored on a
Kyle Rachels' ground out to third base.
The hosts retook the lead for good in their half of the third. Kenny Decelle had a two-out single and scored on a double by Christopher Wright. Sonoma State took a 3-2 lead on a Garret Bono single to center field. They added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh inning to increase their lead to 5-2 heading into the final two innings.
The Warriors had a chance to tie the game in their last at bat. Rachels had a lead-off single. He was out when
Alex Solis reached on a fielder's choice.
Jacob Baker pinch ran for Solis.
Tyler Van Dyk singled Baker to second on a one-out single.
Mac Cabero pinch ran for Van Dyk. Sonoma reliever Nik Kamages induced the next Warrior to ground out into a game-ending double play as the Seawolves took the opener, 5-2.
STAN STATE HITTERS: Five different Warriors had one hit apiece in
Robert Valdivia,
Kyle Rachels,
Alex Solis,
Tyler Van Dyk, and
Danny Murphy. Murphy and
Jackson Brooks each scored the Warriors' runs while driving in runs for Stan State were
Robert Valdivia and Rachels.
WARRIOR PITCHERS: Austin Balentine (4-2) picked up the loss in the start. He pitched six innings, giving up ten hits and four runs while striking out two and walking one.
Patrick Sweeney pitched two innings of relief, giving up two hits and a run while walking one.
GAME TWO: Stan State (12-16-1, 8-12 CCAA) took a 5-0 lead with a five-run second inning.
JD Madrigal,
Flavio Perez, and
Jerry Nix had back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Madrigal scored when
Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch for the game's first run.
Ryan Leonesio drove home Perez and Nix with a two-run double to left field to increase the Warriors' lead to 3-0. Stan State took a 4-0 lead on a
Robert Valdivia single through the right side to bring in Baker. Leonesio scored when
Chris Catalano grounded into a double play to give the guests a 5-0 lead.
Kyle Rachels' lead-off solo home run in the top of the third, his fifth home run of the season, increased the Warrior lead to 6-0.
Sonoma State cut the Warrior lead to 6-2 with a two-run third inning. Braeden Holliday's lead-off solo home run in the Sonoma fourth cut the Stan State lead in half, 6-3.
Stan State broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. Perez drew a lead-off walk and went to third on a Nix double. Baker drew a bases loaded walk. Still with no one out, Perez scored on a wild pitch. Leonesio drew another bases loaded walk. Nix scored on a Valdivia single to center field. Baker scored on a
Chris Catalano single up the middle. Leonesio scored the Warriors' fourth run of the game on a ground out by
Alex Solis as the Warriors took a 10-3 lead.
The visitors added two more runs on a one-out two-run home run by Baker which brought in Nix who reached when he was by a pitch as Stan State took a 12-3 lead in their half of the seventh. Perez's lead-off solo home run gave the Warriors a 13-3 lead in the ninth inning.
Sonoma State had a chance to cut into the Warrior lead in its last at bat, but
Kody Cardoza (3-1) held the Seawolves scoreless and stranded two runners on base as Stan State took the night cap, 13-3.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Three Warriors had multiple-hit games in
Robert Valdivia (three-for-five),
Jerry Nix (three-for-four), and
Flavio Perez (two-for-four).
Jacob Baker drove in three runs while
Ryan Leonesio and Valdivia each drove in two runs. The trio of Perez, Nix, and Baker each scored three runs while Leonesio scored two runs.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Caleb Bertoncini recorded the no-decision in the start.
Kody Cardoza picked up the win pitching six innings of three-hit relief ball while striking out four.
UP NEXT: The two teams will finish off the four-game series this Saturday, March 30 with a noon starting doubleheader at Seawolf Diamond on the campus of Sonoma State. The Warriors will return home, April 5-7, for a four-game CCAA series with Cal Poly Pomona.
