TURLOCK, Calif.--- In their final game of the 21
st Annual Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock, Stan State defeated Dominican, 8-7, on
Lauryn Serda's walk-off run scoring single that brought in
Katie Thornsberry in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Sasha Martello picked up the win in relief while
Mikaela Ferreira was four-for-four with two runs scored and two doubles.
Dominican (17-16) took a 2-0 lead after an inning and a half. Taylor Rodriguez walked and advanced to second on a ground out by Mariah Hopkins. She stayed at second on an infield single by Taylor Eby. She scored on a one-out single by Kamaleinani Kalekini. With two outs, Eby scored when Caitlyn Perales reached on a Warrior error.
Stan State cut the deficit in half of the second inning.
Karli DalBianco had a lead-off double. She went to third on a fly out to center by
Marissa Cerda. She scored on a bunt single by
Katie Thornsberry.
The Warriors took a 5-2 lead with a three-run third inning. With one out,
Lauryn Serda walked and went to second on a
Mikaela Ferreira single up the middle.
Sasha Martello singled to load the bases.
DalBianco drove in Serda and Ferreira with a single up the middle to give Stan State (10-16) a 3-2 lead. The hosts added two more runs to take a 5-2 lead.
Sarah Warden reached on a fielder's choice and both Martello and DalBianco scored on an errant Penguin throw.
Dominican tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with a three-run inning capped by a two-out single by Kaleikini, to tie the game at 5-5.
Stan State retook the lead in its half of the fifth, 6-5. Ferreira had a lead-off double and alter scored on a Warden sacrifice fly to center field.
The Penguins tied the game in the seventh inning on a two-out single by Perales which drove in Hayley Gano, 6-6. Stan State didn't score in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings where extra-innings were played.
Dominican took a 7-6 lead in its half of the eighth. Tiarea Guerrero was placed on second and scored on a Warrior error.
Stan State came back with two runs of its own to take the 8-7 TOC finale. Warden was placed on second and went to third on a
Marissa Cerda bunt single. Warden scored when Cerda was out at second as
Katie Thornsberry reached on a fielder's choice.
Faith Erb had an infield single and Thornsberry to second.
Jessica Gutierrez reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Thornsberry scored the game-winning run when Serda drove her in with a single through the left side to give Stan State the 8-7 walk-off victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had eleven hits with four coming from
Mikaela Ferreira (four-for-four, two doubles, two runs scored).
Karli DalBianco was two-for-two, driving in two runs and scoring twice.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Victoria Alarcon recorded the no-decision in the start for the hosts.
Sasha Martello (8-4) picked up the win in relief, giving up four hits and two runs (one earned).
UP NEXT: The Warriors will host SF State in a four-game series this weekend, March 29-30. The two teams will play a 1pm starting doubleheader on Friday and a noon starting doubleheader this Saturday.
