Warriors Split Doubleheader with SF State

TURLOCK, Calif. ---  Stan State rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take game one of this weekend's four-game series with the visiting SF State Gators 7-4.  Victoria Alarcon picked up her first victory of the season in the start while Sasha Martello recorded her second save.  Jessica Gutierrez had a two-run triple to key the Warriors' victory.  The Gators took the night cap, 4-2, as the two team split the first two games of the four-game weekend series.

GAME ONE:  The Gators took a 2-90 lead in their first at bat.  Kai Deleon had a lead-off walk and stole second.  She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Marley Gonzalez.  Deleon scored on a bunt single by Daniella Guerrier.  Emily Madrigal pinch ran for Guerrier and stole second.  She scored on a two-out double by Kira Nilsson.

Stan State (11-17, 7-10 CCAA) cut the deficit in half with a run in its half of the first inning.  With one out, Mikaela Ferreira reached on a fielder's choice.  She went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out run scoring single by Sasha Martello

SF State increased its lead to 3-1 in the top of the third.  Deleon had a lead-off double and stole third.  She scored on a two-out single by Phoebe Schultz. 
Once again, Stan State cut its deficit in half.  Lauryn Sera had a two-out double and scored on a double by Ferreira to cut the Gator lead to 3-2 after three complete innings.

The Warriors took a 5-3 lead after a three-run fourth inning.  Sarah Warden and Marissa Cerda had back-to-back lead-off singles.  Katie Thornberry reached on a fielder's choice which Warden was out at third.  Faith Erb had an infield single which Cerda scored when the Gators had a fielding error.  Jessica Gutierrez had a one-out two-run triple to give Stan State a 5-3 lead. 

Stan State added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead.  The Warriors added another run in the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead.  SF State cut the Warrior lead to 7-4, but that is the closest the guests would get as Stan State took the opener 7-4.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Jessica Gutierrez went two-for-three with a two-run triple.  Sarah Warden added two hits.  Mikaela Ferreira, Sasha Martello, and Marissa Cerda each drove in a run. 

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Victoria Alarcon (1-5) picked up the win in the start.  She pitched 4.2 innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out four and walking three.  Sasha Martello recorded her second save by pitching 2.1 relief innings, giving up three hits and one unearned run while striking out one.

GAME TWO:  San Francisco State (13-16, 7-10 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in its half of the first inning.  Kai DeLeon had a lead-off double and stole third.  She scored on a one-out single by Daniella Guerrera who went to second on a single by Phoebe Schultz.  With two outs, Guerrera scored on a double steal attempt which Kira Nilson was thrown out at second.

Lauryn Serda singled with one out in the bottom of the first inning for the Warriors.  She scored on a two-run home run to left center by Mikaela Ferreira, her third of the season, to tie the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the Gator half of the seventh inning.  Mia Miassi had a lead-off home run to give the Gators a 3-2 lead.  They doubled their lead on a one-out double by Marley Gonzalez to 4-2. Elise Roy (7-5) pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the Gator 4-2 night cap victory.

WARRIOR HITTERS: Lauryn Serda had two of the Warriors' four hits and scored one of their two runs.  Mikaela Ferreira had a two-run home run.  Payton Applequist had the Warriors' other hit.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Shelby Frutoz (2-8) recorded the loss in the start.  She pitched 6.1 innings, giving up nine hits and four runs while striking out nine and walking one.  Sasha Martello pitched 0.2 scoreless innings of relief, while giving up two hits and striking out one.

UP NEXT:  The two teams will finish off the four-game series with an 11an starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 30.
