Warriors Sweep Series from Chico State

TURLOCK, Calif.---  After sweeping Sunday's doubleheader from the visiting Chico State Wildcats, Stan State swept today's doubleheader 7-2 and 1-0 (8) to take all four games from their visitors.  Sasha Martello recorded her third straight victory in game one while Shelby Frutoz pitched an eight-inning complete game five-hit shutout in the night cap.  
 
GAME ONE:  Chico State (3-12, 3-9 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead on Lilly Cante's solo home run in the Wildcat's third inning. The Warriors took a 3-1 lead with a three-run third inning.  Faith Erb and Jessica Gutierrez had back-to-back one-out singles in the Warrior third.  They advanced a base when Sasha Martello was hit by a pitch.  Mikaela Ferreira drove in Erb and Gutierrez in with a two-run single.  With two outs, Lauryn Serda singled to load the bases.  Payton Applequist was hit by a pitch to bring in Martello with the innings' third run. Stan State took a 5-0 lead on a two-run single by Karli DalBianco.  They added another run on a Marissa Cerda single which brought in Applequist to give the hosts a 6-1 lead.  
 
Chico State cut the lead to 6-2 with a run in the fourth.  Stan State added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.  Serda had a lead-off triple and scored on a ground out by DalBianco as the Warriors took a 7-2 lead.
 
The Wildcats had a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but Martello induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play to preserve the 7-2 Warrior victory.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS:  Lauryn Serda was three-for-three with two runs scored.  He added a double and a triple.  Karli DalBianco drove in three runs and Mikaela Ferreira droves in two runs.  Jessica Guteirrez and Faith Erb each had two hits.
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Sasha Martello pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief while giving up just two hits for her third straight victory.  Victoria Alarcon recorded the no-decision in the start for the hosts.
 
GAME TWO:  The series finale was a pitching duel between the Warriors' Shelby Frutoz (1-6) and Chico State's Katelyn Oldwin and Amelia Valdez (1-7).  
 
The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead in their half of the fourth inning.  Ali Lewis had a one-out single and went to second when Destiny Sevilla walked.  With two outs, Ashley Rocha was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Frutoz induced the next batter to ground out to end the scoring threat.
 
They had another chance in the top of the seventh.  Rocha had a lead-off single and went to third on a double by Elisa Haas.  With two outs, Tayler Berens grounded out to a fielder's choice which Rocha was thrown out at home.  Frutoz induced the next Wildcat to fly out to center field to end the inning.  
 
Stan State (6-13, 5-7 CCAA) had its chance for the lead in its half of the seventh.  Marissa Cerda had a lead-off single.  She went to second on a one-out single by Jessica Gutierrez.  With two outs, Mikaela Ferreria walked to load the bases.  The next Warrior popped out to third to end the inning.  
 
Frutoz retired the Wildcats in order in the top of the eighth.  Sasha Martello walked and was pinch ran for by Katie Thornsberry with one out.  Thornsberry scored when Karli DalBianco reached on a throwing error by the Wildcats as the Warriors won their second game of the series in their last at bat.
 
WARRIOR HITTERS:  Sasha Martello had two of the Warriors' five hits.  Marissa Cerda, Jessica Gutierrez, and Lauryn Serda each had a hit.  
 
STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Shelby Frutoz pitched a five-hit complete game shutout.  She struck out five and walked two in eight innings.  
 
UP NEXT:  Stan State returns to the diamond in San Bernardino for a four-game series, March 15-16, against Cal State San Bernardino.  The Warriors return home, March 21-24, when they host the 21st Annual Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock at Warrior Field and Pedretti Sports Complex.  Stan State will face Azusa Pacific (March 22, 11:30am), Central Washington (March 22, 4:30pm), Hawai'i Hilo (March 23, 4:30pm),  and Dominican (March 24, noon).  The Warriors return to CCAA action for a four-game series at home against San Francisco State, March 29-30.
