Softball Sweeps Otters, 9-1 (5) and 4-3

SEASIDE, Calif.---  Stan State swept the first two games of this weekend's four-game series with the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside, Calif.  The Warriors took game one, 9-1 (5 innings) behind a 12-hit attack by Stan State.  They won the night cap 4-3 as the Warriors took advantage of six Otter errors. 

GAME ONE: Cal State Monterey Bay took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out run scoring double by Anastacia Alba. 

Stan State took a 7-1 lead in thanks to a seven-run third inning.  Marissa Cerda and Faith Erb had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning.  Cerda scored on one-out single by Lauryn Serda. Mikaela Ferreira singled to load the bases.  Sasha Martello's two-run double brought in Erb and Serda which Ferreira scored on an Otter error.  Stan State added another run on a Karli DalBianco's single which brought in Martello.  With one out, Sarah Warden which DalBianco went to second on.  Katie Thornsberry drove in DalBianco.  Warden scored on a fielder's choice by Cerda to give Stan State a 7-1 lead. 

Stan State (16-20, 12-13 CCAA) took a 9-1 lead on a two-run home run by Sarah Warden in the top of the fifth inning.  Martello (10-5) held the Otters scoreless in the fifth to take the 9-1 run ruled game.

WARRIOR HITTERS: Sarah Warden went two-for-three with two runs batted in and two runs scored.  She had a two-run home run.  Karli DalBianco had two hits and a run batted in and scored twice while Sasha Martello drove in two runs.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Sasha Martello picked up her tenth win of the season, by pitching five innings, giving up seven hits and a run while striking out two.

GAME TWO:  For the second straight game, Cal State Monterey Bay (14-25, 8-18 CCAA) took the early lead, this time a 2-0 lead.  Stan State took advantage of three Otter errors as the guests took a 3-2 lead.

The Otters tied the game in the bottom of the third, 3-3 on a two-out runs scoring double by Lauren Bullis. 

Stan State retook the lead with a run in the fifth inning.  Lauryn Serda had a lead-off single.  She advanced to second when Mikaela Ferreira reached on a fielder's choice.  Ferreira was out at second when Karli DalBianco reached on a fielder's choice.  Serda scored on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Warden as Stan State took a 4-3 lead. 

Cal State Monterey Bay had couple of chances to tie or take the lead in the last couple of innings including the seventh.  Jessica Kim reached on a Warrior error.  She went to third on a pinch-hit single by Ashley Honorio who then stole second.  Warriors' starter Victoria Alarcon struck out the next three Otters as the Warriors swept the doubleheader. 

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Sarah Warden had two of the Warriors' five hits including a run batted in.  Three other Warriors had a hit apiece in Lauryn Serda, Katie Thornsberry, and Faith Erb.

STAN STATE PITCHERS:  Victoria Alarcon (3-7) pitched seven innings, giving up seven hits and three runs, striking out five and walkng one.

UP NEXT: Stan State will finish of the four-game series tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader.  The Warriors will return home, April 19-20, for a four-game series with Sonoma State.  This will be their final four home games of the regular season.  They will host the Seawolves in a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Friday, April 20.  The series will conclude with an 11:00 a.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, April 21.  Prior the start of the doubleheader on Saturday, Stan State will recognize its two seniors in Faith Erb and Mikaela Ferreira
