SEASIDE, Calif.--- After taking the first two games of the weekend series on Friday afternoon, Stan State was swept by Cal State Monterey 9-0 (5) and 8-7 (9) this afternoon in Seaside, Calif. The two teams split the weekend series at the Otter Sports Complex. Heading into this week, Stan State is just percentage points out of the sixth and final spot for the CCAA Softball Championships, May 1-3, in San Marcos, Calif.
GAME ONE: Cal State Monterey Bay (16-25, 10-18 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead with a two run second inning. The Otters added seven more runs in their half of the fourth to take a 9-0 lead. Anastacia Alba's three-run home run was the big hit for CSUMB in the seven-run fourth.
Stan State had a chance to score in its half of the fifth, with two outs,
Mikaela Ferreira had a single but the Mackenzie Willis (11-11) induced the final Warrior to fly out to preserve the 9-0 five-inning victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Mikaela Ferreira had both of the Warriors' two hits.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Shelby Frutoz recorded the loss in the start for the Warriors.
Sasha Martello pitched 0.2 innings of relief.
GAME TWO: Stan State (16-22, 12-15 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Mikaela Ferreira reached on two-out Otter error. She went to second when
Sasha Martello and scored on a single by
Karli DalBianco.
The Otters took a 3-1 lead in its half of the first keyed by a two-out two-run double by Emma Mendoza. Stan State came back four-run second to take a 5-3 lead. With one out,
Faith Erb had a one-out single and went to second when
Lauryn Serda reached on an error by the Otters on a sacrifice bunt. They both scored on a two-run double by Ferreira.
Sasha Martello single to advance Ferreira to third DalBianco drove in both runners with a two-run double to give Stan State a 5-3 lead. The Otters tied the game at 5-5, with a two-run third inning. They took a 6-5 lead on a solo home run by Emma Mendoza.
The Warriors retook the lead, 7-6, with two runs in their half of the sixth inning. Serda had a lead-off single and went to second on a walk by
Jessica Gutierrez. She scored on a double by Ferreira. The Warriors took a 7-6 lead on a DalBianco sacrifice fly that brought in Gutierrez.
CSUMB tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a one-out run scoring single by Haylee Clay to send the game into extra-innings.
The Otters won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Abby Alcayaga had a lead-off double and went to third on a ground out by Mendoza. She scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Jaedyn White.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had 12 hits in the night cap led by
Sasha Martello who went three-for-four with a run scored.
Karli DalBianco was two-for-four with four runs batted in while
Mikaela Ferreira went two-four-four with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
Payton Applequist was two-for-five.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Victoria Alarcon suffered the loss for the Warriors while
Shelby Frutoz also pitched for Stan State.
STILL IN THE HUNT FOR PLAY-OFFS: With nine games left in the regular season, Stan State sits in seventh place in the CCAA regular season standings. The top six teams at the end of the regular season, April 28 will receive a berth to the CCAA Softball Championships, May 1-4, at Cal State San Marcos. After this weekend, the top seven teams are 1.) Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-10) and Sonoma State (16-10), 3.) Cal State San Marcos (14-10), 4.) Cal State San Bernardino (14-11), 5.) SF State (14-14), 6.) Cal State East Bay (13-13), and 7.) Stan State (12-15). The final three teams in the CCAA are Chico State (10-14), Cal Poly Humboldt (8-12), and Cal State Monterey Bay (10-18). Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt will play a four-game series in Arcata, April 15-16.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will return home, April 19-20, for a four-game series with Sonoma State. This will be their final four home games of the regular season. They will host the Seawolves in a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Friday, April 20. The series will conclude with an 11:00 a.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, April 21. Prior the start of the doubleheader on Saturday, Stan State will recognize its two seniors in
Faith Erb and
Mikaela Ferreira.
