HAYWARD, Calif.--- Stan State kept its post-season berth alive after a doubleheader split with Cal State East Bay this afternoon in Hayward. The Warriors saw their late-inning rally fall short in the series opener losing 4-3 to the Pioneers. Stan State came back to take the night cap 5-4.
GAME ONE: The series opener was scoreless until the top of the third inning. With one out,
Lauryn Serda walked and scored on a double by
Mikaela Ferreira to give Stan State the early 1-0 lead. Cal State East Bay (24-19, 16-16 CCAA) took a 2-1 on an Annalise Garcia two-run home run in the bottom of the third.
The hosts added two important insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out two-run home run by Kyana Elder to take a 4-1 lead.
Stan State made it interesting in its last at bat. With one out,
Faith Erb drew a walk. She scored on a two-out double by Ferreira who then scored on a double by
Karli DalBianco.
Sasha Martello drew a two-out walk. She was pinch ran for by
Emily Bigley.
Marissa Cerda loaded the bases with a single to right field, but reliever Marissa Quintero induced the next Warrior to ground out to third to preserve the 4-3 Pioneer victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had seven hits in the game led by
Mikaela Ferreira who went two-for-three with two runs batted in, a run scored, and two doubles. Marrisa Cerda was three-for-four for the visitors.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Victoria Alarcon (4-11) suffered the loss for the Warriors in the start.
Sasha Martello also pitched for the Warriors.
GAME TWO: The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead on a two-out run scoring double by Jeslyn Cuellar which scored Ashlee Toy in the bottom of the first.
Sasha Martello's lead-off solo home run in the top of the second inning tied the game at 1-1 for the Warriors. They took a 2-1 lead on a two-out single by
Katie Thornsberry which scored
Shelby Frutoz.
Stan State (18-26, 14-20 CCAA) doubled its lead to 4-1 with a two-run third inning.
Faith Erb had a one-out single and went to third on a single by
Mikaela Ferreira. With one out,
Karli DalBianco drove hom both Erb and Ferreira with a double to right center.
The Pioneers tied the game with a three-run fourth inning as they took advantage of a Warrior error, 4-4.
The game remained tied until the Warrior half of the sixth.
Shelby Frutoz and
Noelany Ramirez had back-to-back one-out singles.
Emily Bigley pinch ran for Frutoz. With two outs and runners on second and third after a ground out by
Katie Thornsberry, Erb had an infield single that brought in Bigley with what proved to be the game-winning run.
East Bay had a chance to tie the game as the Pioneers had runners on first and second with one out, but
Sasha Martello induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Martello (11-6) retired the Pioneers in order in the seventh as Stan State took the night cap, 5-4.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had eleven hits in game two.
Mikaela Ferreira went two-for-four with a run scored while
Faith Erb was two-for-three with a run batted in and a run scored.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Shelby Frutoz had the no-decision in the start for the Warriors.
Sasha Martello picked up the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out one and walking one.
UP NEXT: Stan State will look to clinch a berth in the post-season as the Warriors will play a noon starting doubleheader tomorrow, April 27 at Cal State East Bay to end the regular season. The Warriors need to sweep the Pioneers and get some help in the other CCAA regular season finales.
