TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State went 2-2 in its final home stand of the 2024 regular season this weekend against Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars are in first place in the CCAA with just four games left in the regular season. Prior to the game on Sunday, Stan State recognized its seven seniors in
Caleb Bertoncini,
Kody Cardoza,
Tony Cortez,
Will Crookham,
Tony Jacob,
Kyle Rachels, and
Damian Vallejos.
The Warriors started the weekend with back-to-back complete game victories by
Austin Balentine and
Caleb Bertoncini in Stan State's 8-4 Friday victory and 5-1 victory in game one on Saturday. Cal State San Marcos (27-17, 26-13 CCAA) took the final two games of the series 4-3 in Saturday's night cap and 18-2 in the series finale on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Phoenix Sommay had a lead-off single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Teunissen. He scored on a one-out single by Ethan Rivera.
Stan State (16-26-1, 12-22 CCAA) tied the game in its half of the first.
Robert Valdivia had a lead-off triple and scored when
Kyle Rachels reached on a Cougar error. The Warriors took the 2-1 lead with a run in the second inning.
Jerry Nix had a lead-off double, went to third on a
Jacob Baker sacrifice bunt. He scored on a
Ryan Leonesio ground out to third base.
The Cougars tied the game, 2-2, with a run in the third. Teunissen had a lead-off double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rivera.
The guests took a 5-2 lead, a lead they would not relinquish, with a three-run fourth inning. They added four more runs in the sixth, third in the seventh, and six in the ninth to take the 18-2 series finale victory.
WARRIOR HITTERS: Stan State had six hits in the game led by
Robert Valdivia's two hits. He also scored a run. Four other Warriors had one hit apiece in
JD Madrigal,
Tyler Van Dyk,
Jerry Nix, and
Ryan Leonesio.
STAN STATE PITCHERS: Trent Huff suffered the loss in the start for the Warriors. Five other Stan State pitchers saw action on the mound in
Kody Cardoza,
Damian Vallejos,
Noah Chelberg,
Tony Cortez, and
Quinn Oliver. The freshman Oliver pitched one scoreless inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
STILL ALIVE: Stan State is still alive for the sixth and final spot of the CCAA Baseball Championships, May 9-11, at Cal Poly Pomona.

FINAL FOUR GAMES: Stan State will travel to Los Angeles, this Thursday-Saturday, May 2-4, for a four-game series with Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles. The series will begin with a 6pm single game this Thursday, May 2. The two teams will continue the series with a 1pm starting doubleheader this Friday, May 3. The series will conclude with a noon starting series finale this Saturday, May 4.
