Broncos Take Series from Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State was swept this afternoon 9-1 and 8-4 in the final two games of the four-game weekend conference series at Warrior Field.  With the two victories, Cal Poly Pomona (19-13, 15-9 CCAA) swept the weekend series from the Warriors.

GAME ONE:  This afternoon's opener was scoreless until the Bronco half of the fourth.  Cal Poly Pomona scored four runs on five hits capped by a one-out run scoring single by Brent Cota as the guests took a 4-0 lead.

The Warriors came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning.  With two outs, Kyle Rachels was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a single by JD Madrigal and scored on a two-out single by Danny Murphy

The Broncos added two more runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-1 lead.  They secured the win on a two-out bases clearing triple by Anthony Gibbons as they took the opener, 9-1.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Kyle Rachels and JD Madrigal each went two-for-three.  Danny Murphy had a run batted in while Rachels had a double while Jackson Brooks stole two bases.

STAN STATE PITCHERS: Trent Huff suffered the loss in the start.  Josh Ochoa, Damian Vallejos, and JoJo Keldsen combined to pitch five relief innings, giving up seven hits and five runs while striking out five and walking three.

GAME TWO: Cal Poly Pomona took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Broncos took advantage of a Warrior error. 
Stan State (13-21-1, 9-17 CCAA) cut the deficit in half with a run in the third inning.  Flavio Perez and Jacob Baker had back-to-back lead-off singles.  They advanced a base on a Robert Valdivia sacrifice bunt.  Perez scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Rachels

The Warriors tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Valdivia had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice by Rachels.  With one out, Valdivia scored when Tyler Van Dyk singled and an errant throw by the Broncos tied the game for the Warriors at 2-2. 

Cal Poly Pomona erupted for six runs in its half of the ninth to take an 8-2 lead.  The Warriors cut the deficit in the bottom of the seventh.  With two outs, Ryan Leonesio had a double and scored on a home run
by Jacob Baker to cut the deficit to 8-4.  Broncos' starter Noel Soto struck out the final Warrior to preserve the 8-4 Pomona victory.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Jacob Baker was two-for-three with a two-run home run. Tyler Van Dyk was two-for-three for Stan State and Ryan Leonesio added a double.

STAN STATE PITCHERS: Patrick Sweeney (0-1) suffered the loss in the start.  He pitched six innings, giving up six hits and four runs (two earned), while striking out two and walking one.  Noah Chelberg and Quinn Oliver combined to pitch one inning of relief, giving up four this and four runs, striking out one and walking one.

UP NEXT:  Warriors will return to the diamond this weekend, April 12-14, for a four-game series at San Francisco State.  The series will begin with a 3:00 pm single game on Friday, April 12.  The two teams will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 13.  The series will be Sunday, April 14 at noon.
