Warriors Use Second Half Surge to Key 72-58 Victory over Humboldt

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State outscored the visiting Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks 45-24 and held them to just 32% shooting from the field including just 16% from threes to key its 72-58 CCAA victory at The Fitz this evening.  Jason Cibull led the way for the Warriors with 17 points while Jeremiah Jones chipped in 14 points and William Chavarin added 11 points.

FIRST HALF:  Daniel Ameyaw's three off a pass from William Chavarin gave the hosts an early 9-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game.  They kept their five-point lead (17-12) on a Jonathan Tchengang jumper mid-way through the first half.  Cal Poly Humboldt (5-5, 1-4 CCAA) outscored the Warriors 22-9 in the final ten minutes of the half to take a 34-26 lead into the second half. 

SECOND HALF:  William Chavarin's trey off a pass from Jeremiah Jones capped a 11-1 run to begin the new half for the hosts as they took a 37-35 lead four minutes into the second half.  Stan State (6-5, 3-2 CCAA) took a 52-43 lead on a Mahda Fallay lay-up with 8:30 to go in the game.  Two free throws by Daniel Ameyaw increased the Warriors' lead to 59-45 at the 6:24 mark of the half.  A Jeremiah Jones' lay-up off a Jason Cibull assist and steal gave Stan State a 72-53 lead with just 91 seconds left on the clock as the Warriors took the 72-58 CCAA home victory.

DEFENSE:  The Warriors held the visiting Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks to just 41% shooting from the field including just 19% from beyond the arc.  They held the Jacks to just 32% shooting in the second half and just 16% from beyond the arc. Stan State forced 21 turnovers by Humboldt including nine by steals (two each by Willam Chavarin and Jason Cibull). 

5-1:  Stan State is now 5-1 this season when the Warriors score 70 points or more in a game after its 72-58 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt.  Their only win when scoring less than 70 points was a 69-68 overtime victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on Dec. 21. 

32-20: Once again, Stan State's bench outscored its opponents' bench (this time 32-20).  Jason Cibull had 17 points while Mahda Fallay chipped in seven points and Fabian Reichstadt added six points while Jordan Smith had two points.

THREE IN DOUBLE DIGITS:  Jason Cibull, Jeremiah Jones, and William Chavarin each scored in double digits for the Warriors.  Cibull had 17 points off the bench to go with his four assists and two steals.  Jones added 14 points all in the second half.  He dished out five assists and grabbed seven rebounds.  Chavarin had 11 points for the hosts.

THE BATTLE OF THE GLASS:  Stan State won the battle of the glass, 34-31.  Daniel Ameyaw and Jeremiah Jones led the way each with seven rebounds.  The trio of Jonathan Tchengang, William Chavarin, and Mahda Fallay each had three rebounds for the victors.

UP NEXT:  The Warriors continue their mini two-game home stand this Saturday, January 4 at 3:00 p.m. on City of Turlock Day when they host Chico State.  The Wildcats defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 78-74 this evening in Seaside.
