TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State started its four-game home stand with a 95-85 victory over the visiting Sonoma State Seawolves this evening at The Fitz. The 95 points were the most scored by the Warriors since a 97-88 victory at Cal State San Bernardino, February 23, 2019. Four players scored in double digits led by
Jeremiah Jones with 21 points.
Jonathan Tchengang added a career high 20 points,
Jason Zimmer chipped in a season high 18 points, and
Cameron Walker scored 11 points for the victors.
FIRST HALF: Jason Zimmer's trey gave the Warriors a 16-9 lead in the first seven minutes to start the game for the hosts. Stan State (8-9, 5-6 CCAA) increased its lead to ten (26-16) on a
Jason Cibull with 8:10 to go in the half. In the next four minutes, Sonoma State outscored the Warriors 12-6 to cut the Stan State lead to 32-28. Stan State came back and went on a 7-0 run to take a 39-29 lead with 38 seconds to go in the first stanza. A trey by Nick Medeiros cut the Warrior lead to 39-31 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Early in the second half,
Jonathan Tchengang's two free throws gave the hosts a 44-33 lead. An Aaron Ragen trey capped a 12-2 run by Sonoma State (8-8, 4-6 CCAA) to cut the Warrior lead to 46-45. Back-to-back treys by
Cameron Walker and
Jeremiah Jones increased the hosts' lead to 61-52 at the 12:52 mark of the second half. Twice in the next five minutes, Stan State had a thirteen-point lead including 72-59 when
William Chavarin made two free throws. Sonoma State didn't go away as the guests cut the Warrior lead to two possessions (78-72) on two free throws by Julian Bryan with just 4:24 to go in the game. Jones scored the next five points for Stan State to give the Warriors an 85-74 lead a lead they would not relinquish as they took the 95-85 victory.
FOUR IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Stan State had four players score in double figures led by
Jeremiah Jones with 21 points (19 in the second half).
Jonathan Tchengang chipped in a career high 20 points while
Jason Zimmer added a season high 18 points.
Cameron Walker scored 11 points for the victors.
6-1: The Warriors are now 6-1 when they score 70 points or more in a game. Their only loss was an 86-83 overtime loss to UC Merced at home on Nov. 23. Stan State's two victories when scoring less than 70 points were a 69-68 overtime win at Cal State Monterey Bay and a 67-55 victory at San Francisco State.
TWO TO ONE: Stan State had a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio this evening with
Jason Zimmer leading the way with a season high five assists and no turnovers.
Cameron Walker dished out four assists with just one turnover.
Jason Cibull had two assists and no turnovers while
Jonathan Tchengang had one assist with no turnovers. The trio of
Daniel Ameyaw,
Mahda Fallay, and
Jeremiah Jones had six combined assists and six combined turnovers.
54.5%: The Warriors shot 54.5% from the field this evening including 44% from three-point range. They went 15-for-24 in the second half including five-of-eight from beyond the arc. The trio of
Jonathan Tchengang,
Cameron Walker, and
Jason Zimmer were a combined 15-for-26 including going five-for-nine from three-point land.
FIVE-WAY TIE FOR FOURTH PLACE: After tonight's win, Stan State is in a five-way tie for fourth place in the CCAA with a 5-6 CCAA record with Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State East Bay, and Cal State Los Angeles. The Warriors are two games out of third place (Cal State San Bernardino) with Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-0) and No. 17 Chico State (10-1) atop the league standings.
SIXTEEN STRAIGHT: With his 21 points this evening,
Jeremiah Jones has scored in double digits in all 16 games he has played in this season. This is the fifth game he has scored 20 or more points. His career high was 33 points in the Warrior victory over Western Oregon on Nov. 15, 2024, in Rohnert Park.
LAST GAME OF THE FIRST HALF OF CCAA SEASON: Stan State continues its four-game home stand this Saturday, January 25 at 3:00 p.m. on Jessica's House Appreciation Day at The Fitz when they host Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 71-64 this evening in Seaside, Calif. This will be the last game of the first half of the CCAA season. After Saturday's game with the Cougars, Stan State will start the second half of the CCAA season hosting Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. and San Francisco State on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 3:00 p.m. Six of the Warriors final ten games will be at home after this weekend.
