SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--- Stan State started its four-game road trip with a 67-55 victory over the SF State Gators in San Francisco this evening.
Jeremiah Jones scored 29 points including 17 in the second half to lead the way for the Warriors.
Jonathan Tchengang added a career high 17 points while
Jason Cibull had 11 points for the victors. The Warriors held their hosts to just 34% shooting including 35% from three-point land.
FIRST HALF: The beginning of the game was even with San Francisco State (5-8, 3-4 CCAA) taking a 22-13 lead with 8:42 left in the half on a lay-up by Pearse Uniacke. Stan State went on a 14-0 run in the next five minutes to take a 27-22 lead on a
Jeremiah Jones' jumper. The Warriors increased their lead to 32-26 on a trey by Jones with just 78 seconds left in the half. A trey by John Bakke cut the guests' lead to 32-29 heading into the locker room at the half.
SECOND HALF: Back-to-back treys by
Jason Cibull and
Jeremiah Jones to begin the second half for Stan State gave the visitors a 38-29 lead just four minutes into the new half. The Gators wouldn't go away as they outscored Stan State 16-7 to tie the game at 45-45 at the 12:15 mark of the second stanza.
Daniel Ameyaw's lay-up capped a 16-3 run by Stan State (7-6, 4-3 CCAA) as the Warriors took a 61-48 lead with four minutes to go in regulation. A Cibull lay-up increased the Warrior lead to 65-51 with 1:44 to go in the game. Tyjean Burrell's three-point play cut the Warrior lead to 65-53, but the closest SF State would get as the Warriors took the 67-55 CCAA road victory.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: Besides winning the game, Stan State won the battle of the boards 40-27.
Mahda Fallay led the way with 11 rebounds with
Daniel Ameyaw grabbing eight boards.
Jason Cibull and
Jonathan Tchengang each added six rebounds and
Jeremiah Jones had five.
DEFENSE: Stan State held the Gators to just 34.4% shooting from the field including 35% from three-point land. SF State shot 33% from the field in the first half and just 22% from three-point land in the second half.
ANOTHER 0NE UNDER 70: The Warriors won their second game when scoring under 70 points. The first one was a 69-68 overtime victory at Cal State Monterey Bay, December 21. They are 5-1 when they score 70 or more points in a game. Three Warriors scored in double figures this evening led by
Jeremiah Jones' game high 29 points followed by
Jonathan Tchengang's 17 and
Jason Cibull's 11 points.
CAREER NIGHTS: Both
Jonathan Tchengang and
Mahda Fallay had career nights this evening. Tchengang scored a career high 17 points. He went five-for-eight from the field including two-for-four from three-point land and five-for-seven from the line. Fallay tied his career high with 11 rebounds with six defensive rebounds. Last season, Fallay grabbed 11 rebounds on February 1, 2024, versus Cal State Los Angeles.
51.1%: Stan State shot 51.1% from the field including 50% from beyond the arc this evening.
Jonathan Tchengang was five-for-eight from the field including two-for-four from three-point land.
Jason Cibull was four-for-nine from the field while he was three-for-six from beyond the arc.
Jeremiah Jones was ten-for-sixteen from the field and five-for-nine from three-point land.
Daniel Ameyaw was three-for-six and
Lloyd French went two-for-two.
ALL 12 GAMES: Jeremiah Jones has scored in double figures in all 12 games he has played in this season. This evening, he recorded fourth game of scoring 20 or more points in a game with his 29 points. He scored a career high 33 points on November 15, 2024, versus Western Oregon. For the season, Jones is averaging 20 points per game while shooting 52.5% from the field, 83.8% from the charity stripe. He has dished out 40 assists and has posted a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio.
UP NEXT: The Warriors continue their four-game road trip this Saturday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Hayward, Calif., against Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 70-66 this evening in Hayward. After Saturday's game, Stan State will finish its four-game road trip with two games in Southern California at Cal State San Bernardino (January 16 at 7:30 p.m.) and at Cal Poly Pomona (January 18 at 3:00 p.m.). The Warriors will return home to The Fitz on January 23 when they host Sonoma State at 7:30 p.m. to begin a four-game home stand.
