Stan State Finishes Historic Season Ranked Number Five Nationally

TURLOCK, Calif.—Stan State, under the guidance of third-year head coach John Powell, delivered the most successful season in program history, setting a new school record with 17 wins and advancing to the NCAA Division II Third Round for the first time. The Warriors' postseason run marked the deepest NCAA Tournament appearance the program has ever achieved, and Stan State finished the year ranked number five nationally in the final United Soccer Coaches poll. The Warriors were ranked number one in the nation for two straight weeks, remained inside the top five for nine consecutive weeks, and spent 10 straight weeks inside the top 15 as they built one of the nation's most consistent and dominant résumés.

Stan State's postseason run came to a close with a 2-0 loss to eventual national champion Midwestern State (Texas) in the NCAA Division II Third Round. The Warriors finished the season 6-2 against opponents that were ranked in the top 25 at the time of competition or went on to finish in the final top 25 poll, further underscoring the strength of their résumé.

Tops in the Nation:
Stan State closed the season among the nation's elite, finishing second in save percentage and second in win–loss percentage, along with fourth in shutout percentage and fourth in goals-against average. The Warriors also ranked fifth in total assists, sixth in assists per game, seventh in goal differential, 11th in points per game, 12th in total points, 17th in scoring offense, and 17th in total goals. Individually, Samuel Villanueva placed second nationally in total assists and third in assists per game, while Gerardo Flores finished seventh in game-winning goals. Emmanuel Duran closed the year 16th in game-winning goals and 35th in total goals, and goalkeeper Angel Ruiz-Hernandez ranked third in save percentage, fourth in shutouts, sixth in goals-against average, and 33rd in total saves.

Top of the CCAA:
Stan State also led the CCAA statistically, finishing first in points, goals, assists, and goals-against average, while ranking sixth in total saves. Individually, Angel Ruiz-Hernandez topped the conference in goals-against average, save percentage, shutouts, and saves. Emmanuel Duran tied for first in goals, ranked second in game-winning goals, and fifth in points. Gerardo Flores led the CCAA in game-winning goals, tied for third in goals, finished fifth in assists, and ranked fourth in points. Samuel Villanueva led the league in assists and tied for seventh in points.

Warriors in the Career Record Book:
Angel Ruiz-Hernandez continued to climb rapidly through the Stan State career record book, finishing first in career goals-against average (0.84), second in save percentage (.806), second in shutouts (17.5), third in wins (23), fourth in minutes played (3,132:14), and sixth in total saves (129). Samuel Villanueva became the program's career assists leader with 17 and moved into a tie for ninth in career points at 29.

Warriors in the Single-Season Record Book:
This season produced one of the most prolific statistical years in Stan State history. Angel Ruiz-Hernandez set the program's single-season records in goals-against average (0.55), shutouts (11.5), and saves percentage (.866), all ranked number one all-time. Samuel Villanueva also earned a number one mark, breaking the single-season assists record with 13. Emmanuel Duran delivered a top-five campaign with 10 goals, the fifth-highest total in program history, and tied for sixth in single-season points with 23. Gerardo Flores added the sixth-best single-season goals total with nine and tied for fifth in single-season assists with six while producing the fifth-best points total at 24. Sebastian Carbajal joined the top-10 list with the ninth-highest single-season goals total, scoring seven.

Warriors in the Single-Match and Team Record Book:
Stan State's 2025 squad also made its mark on the program's all-time single-match and team records. Samuel Villanueva tied the program's single-match assists record with three, matching the top mark first set in 2015. The Warriors also matched or extended several number one program team records, including tying the single-season assists record with 51 and setting new single-season standards with 12 shutouts and a 0.55 goals-against average. Individually, Emmanuel Duran and Gerardo Flores each delivered two-goal, four-point performances that placed them among the program's top-10 single-match point totals. The 2025 Warriors also produced one of the longest unbeaten streaks in school history at 14 matches and tied the program record for consecutive wins at seven, further reinforcing the historic nature of the season.

Postseason Honors:
The Warriors' success translated into one of the most decorated postseason award hauls in school history. Gerardo Flores and Ian Reis earned United Soccer Coaches First Team All-America honors, while Emmanuel Duran was named to the USC Third Team. Angel Ruiz-Hernandez collected USC Second Team All-America and D2CCA Third Team recognition, and Samuel Villanueva earned D2CCA First Team and USC Second Team selections. Villanueva was also honored as a 2025–26 Academic All-American. Flores earned United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Month honors, and the Stan State coaching staff was named the United Soccer Coaches West Regional Staff of the Year.

Regionally, Duran (USC First Team), Flores (D2CCA and USC First Team), Reis (USC First Team), Ruiz-Hernandez (D2CCA and USC First Team), and Villanueva (D2CCA and USC First Team) headlined the All-West Region selections. The Warriors also dominated the All-CCAA teams, with Duran, Flores, Ruiz-Hernandez, Reis, and Villanueva all earning First Team honors. Sebastian Carbajal was named to the Second Team, and Federico Barbieri, Jose Ponce, Landon Real Ruiz, and Adrian Yepez earned Honorable Mention recognition. The Warriors swept the CCAA's major individual awards as Sebastian Carbajal earned Freshman of the Year, Flores was named Forward of the Year, Ruiz-Hernandez was selected Goalkeeper of the Year, and John Powell was recognized as Coach of the Year. In postseason play, Samuel Villanueva was named CCAA Tournament Offensive MVP, Ian Reis earned Defensive MVP honors, and Alexis Cervantes, Emmanuel Duran, and Ruiz-Hernandez were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Villanueva and Yepez were also named to the Academic All-District Team.

FloCollege/CCAA Players of the Week:
Stan State players were regularly featured in the conference's weekly awards throughout the season. Emmanuel Duran opened the year as the CCAA Offensive Player of the Week for September one–seven and earned the honor again November three–seven. Christian Brenes collected Defensive Player of the Week for September eight–14, and Angel Ruiz-Hernandez earned the conference's top defensive honor for September 15–21. Ian Reis added to the Warriors' weekly accolades with a Defensive Player of the Week selection for October 13–19, and Gerardo Flores was named Offensive Player of the Week for October 20–26. Across the fall, Stan State captured seven weekly conference awards, further illustrating the team's depth, balance, and consistent dominance throughout the season.
