TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State started the season with a pair of 6-5 losses to the Central Washington Wildcats this afternoon at Warrior Field. The Wildcats took game one 6-5 in 13 innings after rallied back from a 5-2 deficit heading into the final inning. The Warriors lost in the night cap, also by a 6-5 score, to Central Washington. The two teams will finish off the four-game series tomorrow morning with a 10:00 a.m. starting doubleheader in Turlock, Calif.
GAME ONE: Baba Varner Jr.'s solo home run gave Central Washington an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats increased their lead to 3-0 on a one-out two-run home run by Brandham Ponce in the top of the fourth. They added two more runs int eh top of the seventh on a two-out two-run single by Brady Hinkle.
Stan State (0-2) cut into the Wildcat lead with a two-run seventh. Arthur Navarette, Jr. had a lead-off double and later scored when
Ryan Leonesio reached on an error to cut the deficit to 5-1. The Warriors added another run in their half of the eighth.
Luke Davies walked and went to third on a single by
JD Madrigal. He later scored when
Alex Solis reached on an error to make it 5-2 CWU heading into the final inning.
Jacob Baker began the game reaching on an error. He went to second on a wild pitch. With two-outs, Baker advanced to third on an infield single by Davies. Madrigal hit a three-run home run to tie the game for the hosts and send the game into extra innings.
The Warriors had a chance for the walk-off in the tenth. With two outs,
Danny Murphy singled and then Baker hit a shot to left field, but the Wildcats' Ben Lied saved the day for Central Washington (2-0).
In the top of the 13
th, Logan Blank doubled and later scored on a one-out single by Andrew Sharp as CWU took a 6-5 lead. Stan State once again had a chance to tie the game or win it in its half of the 13
th. Murphy walked and went
to second on a bunt single by Baker. Each runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Leonesio. With one out,
Tyler Van Dyk walked to load the bases. Garrett Nagy (1-0) struck out the next Warrior batter and induced the last out of the game on a fly out to center field as the guests took the 6-5 extra-inning victory.
MULTIPLE-HIT GAMES: Stan State had 13 hits in the opener led by six Warriors who each had two hits in
Luke Davies,
JD Madrigal,
Arthur Navarette Jr.,
Danny Murphy,
Jacob Baker, and
Ryan Leonesio. Madrigal drove in three runs and Davies scored twice.
SCORELESS INNINGS: Cameron Rosen and
Adam Davies combined to pitch six innings of four-hit relief. They struck out six and walked one for the hosts.
GAME TWO: JD Madrigal's second home run of the day, a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning gave Stan State an early 1-0 lead. Central Washington tied the game with a run in the third. The Warriors retook the lead with a run in the third in their half of the third.
Luke Davies had a one-out double. He later scored on a two-out run scoring double by
Flavio Perez as Stan State took the 2-1 lead.
Central Washington took a 5-2 lead with a three-run fifth inning capped by an Andrew Sharp two-out single.
The Warriors cut the CWU lead to 5-4 with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Madrigal had a one-out single and went to second when
Alex Solis walked. They advanced a base on a ground-out by
Flavio Perez. With two outs,
Arthur Navarette Jr., drove in both Warriors with a single through the right side.
Stan State took advantage of some wild pitches by CWU in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5.
Baba Varner Jr's solo home run with two outs in the top of the ninth gave CWU a 6-5 lead. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Madrigal had a single and was pinch run for by
Cooper Winton who then stole. Winning Wildcat pitcher, Brandham Ponce (1-0) induced the next Warrior batter to fly out to right field to preserve the CWU 6-5 victory.
MADRIGAL: JD Madrigal went three-for-four in game two with three runs scored and a solo home run, his second of the day.
Arthur Navarette Jr., drove in two runs while
Flavio Perez drove in a run and Aleix Solis and
Luke Davies scored the other two runs.
HARD-LUCK LOSS: Caleb Bertoncini (0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 4.2 innings giving up three hits and a run while striking out six and walking one.
