TURLOCK, Calif.--- For the second straight day, Stan State Warriors lost two close games to day in a non-conference doubleheader to the visiting Central Washington Wildcats. The visitors came back from a 7-3 to take game one 10-9. The Wildcats took the night cap 5-2. In game one, the trio of
Tyler Van Dyk,
Robert Valdivia, and
Jackson Brooks each drove in two runs.
Danny Murphy had two of the Warriors' five hits in the night cap.
GAME ONE: Central Washington (4-0) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in game three of this weekend's four-game series on a lead-off solo home run by Brandham Ponce. The Warriors had a two-run half of their second to take a 2-1 lead.
Arthur Navarette Jr. and
Flavio Perez had back-to-back lead singles and went to second and third on a
Tyler Van Dyk sacrifice bunt. With two outs,
Jackson Brooks doubled both Warriors to give Stan State a 2-1 lead.
Stan State added three more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead.
Danny Murphy and
JD Madrigal had back-to-back one-out singles. Navarette Jr. singled home Murphy and went to second on the throw. With two outs, Van Dyk drove home Madrigal and Navarette Jr. with a single to center field to increase the hosts' lead to 5-1.
Central Washington cut into the Warrior lead on a two-run home run by Ponce, 5-3, in the top of the fourth inning.
The Warriors came right back with a two-run fifth. With two outs, Van Dyk doubled to center field and scored on a
Robert Valdivia home run over the left field fence to give Stan State a 7-3 lead. Central Washington cut the Warrior lead to 7-5 with a two-run fifth keyed by a Ben Leid run scoring double.
Perez hit a solo home run to begin the Warrior seventh as the hosts took an 8-3 lead.
Jackson Brooks had a two-out single and stole second. He scored on a
Ryan Leonesio single to center field as Stan State (0-4) took a 9-5 lead.
Central Washington scored its sixth run of the game on a Ponce solo home run with two outs in the eighth to cut into Stan State's 9-6 lead.
The Wildcats scored four runs in their half of the ninth to take a 10-9 lead. They took the one-run lead on a questionable call at first that would've ended the inning for CWU.
Stan State had a chance to tie the game in its frame of the ninth. With one out, Van Dyke walked and was pinch run for by
Cooper Winton. Branden Zadow (1-0) induced the next Warrior batter to line out into a game-inning 6-3 double play as the Wildcats took game three of the weekend series, 10-9.
QUALITY START: Rocco Gurrola in his first start as a Warrior pitched five innings to record the no-decision. He gave up six hits and three runs while striking out eight and walking no one.
HOME RUNS: Two Warriors hit their first home runs of the season in
Flavio Perez and
Robert Valdivia. Perez's was a solo shot and Valdivia was a two-run home run.
MULTIPLE-HIT GAMES: Six Warriors each had two hits apiece in
JD Madrigal,
Arthur Navarette Jr.,
Flavio Perez,
Tyler Van Dyk, and
Jackson Brooks. The trio of Van Dyk, Valdivia, and Brooks each drove in two runs. The duo of
Arthur Navarette Jr. and Perez each scored two runs.
GAME TWO: The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of the night cap.
Alex Solis drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a single by
Danny Murphy. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Solis scored on a
ground out to shortstop by
JD Madrigal.
CWU took a 2-1 lead with a two-run second inning. The Wildcats added two more runs in the third keyed by a Brandham Ponce solo home run to take a 4-1 lead.
Stan State cut the Wildcat lead in half with a run in its half of the fifth.
Jackson Brooks had a lead-off single and went second when
Ryan Leonesio drew a walk. Brooks scored on a one-out run scoring single by Murphy, 4-2.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in their half of the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead heading into the last inning and a half.
The hosts had a chance to cut into the visitors' lead in their half of the sixth.
Tyler Van Dyk had a one-out single. He was stranded as the Wildcat starer, Dakota Todd struck out the next two batters.
Todd (1-0) retired Stan State in order in the bottom of the seventh as CWU took the night cap 5-2.
RELIEF APPEARANCES: Greyson Gregory and
LaKeal Morris came in relief and pitched well for the Warriors. Gregory gave up four hits a run while struck out three and walked one in two innings. Morris pitched a scoreless seventh, giving up one hit and striking out three.
FIVE HITS: Stan State had five hits in the night cap keyed by
Danny Murphy's two-for-four game. The trio of
Tyler Van Dyk,
Robert Valdivia, and
Jackson Brooks each had one hit.
14-GAME HOME STAND CONTINUES: Stan State will continue its 14-game home stand this Friday-Saturday; February 7-8 hosting Saint Martin's in a three-game series. The series begins with a single game at 4:00 p.m. this Friday, February7. The two teams will play a noon starting doubleheader this Saturday, February 8.
