Baseball Takes Series Opener with the Saints, 10-1

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State took the series opener 10-1 of its three-game weekend series with the visiting Saint Martin's Saints this evening at Warrior Stadium.  Austin Balentine (1-0) picked up the win in the start while Cameron Rosen recorded his first save as a Warrior pitching four scoreless innings. 

The series opener was scoreless until the Warrior half of the second inning.  Arthur Navarette Jr., had a lead-off single.  He went to second when Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch with one out.  Ryan Leonesio drew a walk to load the bases.  With the count 1-2, Robert Valdivia hit a bases-clearing triple to center to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.  Valdivia scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Murphy to increase the hosts' lead to 4-0.

The Warriors added another run in the third to take a 5-0 lead.  Alex Solis drew a lead-off walk.  He went to second when Tyler Van Dyk drew a two-out walk.  Solis scored on a two-run single through the left side by Baker. 
Saint Martin's (0-5) scored its run in the top of the fifth inning.  With one out, Cole Yonamine had a double to right center.  He scored on a two-out run scoring double by Peter Hollabaugh to cut into the Warrior lead, 5-1.

Stan State (1-4) came right back with two runs of its own to increase the hosts' lead to 7-1.  Navarette, Jr. reached on a one-out fielding error by the Saints.  He scored on a triple to left center by Van Dyk.  The next Warrior batter, Baker, brought in Van Dyk with the Warriors' seventh run on a sacrifice bunt. 

In the bottom of the Warrior half of the sixth, Murphy reached on a Saint error.  He scored on a two-out two run home run by Solis as Stan State took a 9-1 lead.  The Warriors scored their final run in the eighth inning.  Austin Sargent drew a one-out pinch-hit walk.  Jackson Brooks pinch ran for Sargent.  Brooks advanced to third on a single to right field by Navarette and scored on a throwing error by the Saints to give Stan State a 10-1 lead.  Rosen pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the Warrior 10-1 victory.

WARRIOR DUO:  Austin Balentine and Cameron Rosen combined to pitch nine innings, giving up seven hits and one run while striking out nine and walking three.  Balentine (1-0) pitch five innings gave up five hits and one run.  He struck out three and walked no one.  Rosen recorded his first save as a Stan State pitcher.  He pitched four innings of scoreless two hit ball.  The junior transfer struck out six and walked one.

EXTRA BASE-HITS: Of their eight hits, Stan State had four extra base-hits including a two-run home run by Alex Solis.  The trio of Jacob Reyes, Robert Valdivia, and Tyler Van Dyk each had a triple. 

MULTIPLE-RBI:  Stan State had three multiple-RBI games in Jacob Baker, Alex Solis, and Robert Valdivia.  Baker and Solis each drove in two runs while Valdivia drove in three runs.

UP NEXT:  The Warriors and Saint Martin's will finish off their three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at noon.  The two teams will play two nine-inning games.  Prior the first pitch tomorrow at 11:55 a.m.,  Greg Magni'01 will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.  Magni is the current Director of Athletics at Central Valley High School.  He was a member of the Warrior baseball team from 1997 to 2000  and still holds the career appearance record with 88 games.
