Baseball Sweeps Series with Saints

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State swept this afternoon's non-conference doubleheader with the visiting Saint Martin's Saints 10-2 and 7-1 to sweep the weekend's three-game series at Warrior Field. Rocco Gurrola picked up his first win as a Warrior in game one with seven strikeouts.  Alex Solis went two-for-five with four runs batted in, two runs scored, and hit a three-run home run.  In the night cap, Stan State defeated the Saints 7-1 with Luke Davies leading the way going two-for-three with two runs batted in on a home run.  Caleb Bertoncini picked up the win.

GAME ONE:  Stan State (3-4) took a 3-0 lead in its half of the first inning.  Robert Valdivia had a lead-off single and scored on a two-run home run over the right field fence by Luke Davies.  Two batters later, Alex Solis homered to increase the Warrior lead to 3-0. 

Saint Martin's cut the deficit to 3-1 with a run in the top of the third inning.  The score remained 3-1 Warriors until the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Danny Murphy reached on a fielder's choice.  He went to second when Jackson Brooks drew a walk.  The Warriors had a successful double steal attempt and Murphy scored on a Saint error throw to increase Stan State's lead to 4-1.

The Saints came back with a run of their own in the top of the seventh to cut the Warrior lead in half.  With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Davies drew a walk.  He went to second when JD Madrigal walked.  They scored on a two-run double by Solis who scored on a double by Flavio Perez to give Stan State a 7-2 lead. 

Stan State added three more runs in the eighth on one hit and one error.  Brooks head a lead-off single and stole second.  Ryan Leonesio walked to place runners on first and second.  Each advanced a base on a wild pitch.  Robert Valdivia was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.  With one out, Madrigal drove in Brooks and Leonesio when he reached on a fielding error by the Saints. Valdivia reached on a ground out by Solis to give the hosts a 10-2 lead. 

Stan State reliever, Patrick Sweeney, pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the 10-2 Warrior victory.

GURROLA:  Rocco Gurrola (1-0) recorded his first win as a Warrior.  He pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out seven and walking one.  In his two starts of the season, Gurrola has struck out 15 batters and walked no one in 12 innings pitched. 

HOME RUNS:  Stan State had two home runs in today's game one.  Luke Davies had a two-run home run while Alex Solis hit a solo home run.  These were both Warriors' first home runs.

GAME TWO:  The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Luke Davies had a one-out single.  He stole second and scored on an Alex Solis double.  The Warriors took a 3-0 lead on a two-run home run by Davies in the bottom of the third.  They took a 4-0 lead with a run in fourth.  Jacob Baker had a one-out double and scored on a Ryan Leonesio single. 

Stan State had a three-run in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.  Flavio Perez drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a Tyler Van Dyk single.  They each advanced a base on a wild pitch.  Baker scored on a bunt single by Baker.  Van Dyk scored on a sacrifice bunt by Leonesio.

Saint Martin's (0-6) scored its run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final 7-1.

FOUR SCORELESS:  Four Warriors pitched scoreless innings of relief in Caleb Bertoncini, Zach Geiss, Jace Eberthardt, and Greyson Gregory.  Bertoncini (1-1) recorded the win as he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up three hits, walking two and striking out three.  The trio iof Geiss, Eberthardt, and Gregory pitched five innings, giving up three hits, while striking out three and walking three. 

TIED CAREER RECORD:  Alex Solis had his second double of the season today.  That double tied with Kyle Loretelli and Adam Hilpert for the all-time career record with 42 doubles. 

ANOTHER HOME RUN:  Luke Davies hit his second home run of the day and the season in the third inning.  That was a two-run home run that scored Robert Valdivia

UP NEXT:  Stan State will continue its 14-game home stand February 14-16 with a three-game series against Minnesota Crookston. The two teams will play three single games at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 16.  The Golden Eagles are affiliated with the NCAA Division II and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
