TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the visiting Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles 6-3 this afternoon in the series opener of this weekend's three-games series.
Zach Geiss (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 1.2 scoreless innings striking out three.
Flavio Perez and
Jacob Baker combined to go four-for-eight with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Perez added a solo home run, his second of the season.
The game was scoreless until
Flavio Perez's solo lead-off home run in the bottom of the second to give Stan State an early 1-0 lead. The hosts doubled their lead in their half of the fourth.
Tyler Van Dyk had a one-out walk and went to second on an
Arthur Navarette Jr. single to right field. He scored on a two-out double to right field by
Jacob Baker.
Stan State (4-4) added another run int eh fifth to take a 230 lead. With one out,
JD Madrigal was hit by a pitch. He scored on a two-out run scoring double to center field.
The Golden Eagles cut the Warrior lead to 3-2 with a two-run sixth inning. Minnesota Crookston (0-1) tied the game in the top of the eighth. Americo Sculati had a lead-off single. With one out, he went to second when Kobi Miller walked. He advanced to third on a ground out and scored on the throw to tie the game at 3-3.
The Warriors retook the lead with a three-run eighth, 6-3. Baker and
Ryan Leonesio had back-to-back one-out singles to place runners on the corners. Still with no outs, Baker scored on a wild pitch Leonesio went to second. The Warrior second baseman went to third on another wild pitch.
Robert Valdivia drew a one-out walk to place Warriors on the corners again. Leonesio scored the Warrriors' fifth run of the game on a successful sacrifidce bunt by Madrigal. Valdivia later scored on a wild pitch to increase Stan State's lead to 6-3.
Zach Geiss (1-0) retired the Golden Eagles in order including striking out two of the final three outs to preserve the 6-3 Stan State victory.
STILL NO WALKS: Stan State
Rocco Gurrola recorded the no-decision in the start for Stan State. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs while striking out three and walking no one. Gurrola has struck out 18 and walked no one in 17.2 innings pitched.
FIRST WIN AS A WARRIOR: Warrior transfer
Zach Geiss recorded his first victory as Warrior this afternoon. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and striking out three.
PEREZ: Flavio Perez hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the second innings. Perez finished the day two-for-five with two runs batted in and a run scored. He also hit his third double of the season.
ALSO TWO: Jacob Baker had two hits this afternoon with a double. He finished two-for-three with aa run batted in and a run scored.
UP NEXT: Stan State will finish its three-game weekend series with Minnesota Crookston tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader. The Warriors will begin CCAA play after Sunday's doubleheader with a four-game series, February 21-23 against Cal State San Bernardino beginning with a 6:00 p.m. series opener on Friday, February 21.
