TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State Warriors and the No. 17 Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros battled this evening in a CCAA contest on Homecoming Night in Turlock. It was the nationally ranked Toros coming on top 73-70.
Cameron Walker paced the Warriors with 17 points.
Daniel Ameyaw recorded his fourth double-double of the season by scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Jeremiah Jones recorded his 22
nd straight game of scoring in double digits with his 12 points.
FIRST HALF: The first half was even until Stan State (10-13, 7-10 CCAA) took a 14-10 lead on two made throws by
Lloyd French with nine minutes left in the half. The Toros outscored their hosts 15-6 in the next six minutes to take a 25-20 lead. A tip-in by the Warriors'
Jason Zimmer cut the Toro lead to 25-24 with just 93 seconds left in the first stanza. CSUDH finished the half outscoring the Warriors 4-1 to take a 29-25 lead heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Stan State outscored the Toros 6-0 in the first two minutes of the new half to take a 31-29 lead on a
Mahda Fallay free throw. An old-fashioned three-point play by JT Tan gave Cal State Dominguez Hills (20-4, 16-1 CCAA) a 44-40 lead just eight minutes into the second twenty-minutes. The Toros increased their lead to 52-44 on a trey by Jeremy Dent-Smith at the 9:14 mark of the second half.
Cameron Walker's trey off a
Jeremiah Jones assists capped a 17-7 run by the Warriors as they took a 61-59 lead with 3:46 left on the clock. CSUDH came right back and took a 71-65 lead on a trey by Dent-Smith at the 1:32 mark. Stan State scored the next five points on a three by
Jonathan Tchengang and a jumper by Walker jumper to cut the deficit to 71-70. The Warriors fouled Alex Garcia and he connected on both free throws to give the guests a 73-70 lead. Stan State's shot at the end fell short as the Toros took the CCAA contest 73-70.
ONE-GAME OUT: The Warriors are just one game out of fifth place heading into the last five games of the regular season. They are in a tie for eighth place with San Francisco State each with a 7-10 CCAA record. Cal State East Bay, Cal State Los Angeles, and Cal Poly Pomona are tied for fifth place each at 8-9 in CCCAA play. CSU San Bernardino and Cal Poly Humboldt are tied for third at 10-7. Holding the top two spots are Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-1) and Chico State (14-3).
4/7: Daniel Ameyaw posted his fourth double-double of the season and seventh of his career this evening. The junior post player scored 12 points and grabbed a season high 13 rebounds. He added two assists and a steal in 27 minutes of work.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS: Stan State won the battle of the boards this evening 39-30 with
Daniel Ameyaw leading the way with 13 rebounds.
Jeremiah Jones grabbed seven rebounds followed by
Lloyd French and
Jonathan Tchengang each with four boards.
BENCH: The Warriors' bench outscored the Toros' bench 20-19. Leading the way was
Lloyd French with nine points followed by
William Chavarin and
Jason Cibull each with four points.
Fabian Reichstadt chipped in two points and
Mahda Fallay added one point.
14/23: Stan State had 14 assists on its 23 made baskets led by
Jeremiah Jones with six assists followed by
Cameron Walker with four assists.
Lloyd French and
Daniel Ameyaw each added two assists.
WALKER TREY: Cameron Walker connected on a career high five three-point field goals out of the seven he attempted this evening. Walker finished with 17 points to go with his four assists, two rebounds, and one assist.
22: With his 12 points this evening,
Jeremiah Jones has scored in double figures in 22 straight games. He added seven rebounds, six assists and one steal for the hosts.
UP NEXT: Stan State will host Cal State Los Angeles this Saturday, February 15 at 3:00 p.m. on Alumni Day at The Fitz. The Golden Eagles defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 82-77 this evening in Seaside. Earlier this season, the Warriors lost 75-63 at Cal State Los Angeles.
