ROHNERT PARK, Calif. ---- Despite three Warriors scoring in double figures, Stan State lost 78-72 this evening to Sonoma State in The Wolves' Deni in Rohnert Park, Calif. With the loss, Stan State split the season series with the Seawolves as the Warriors won the first meeting 95-85 earlier this year in Turlock.
Jeremiah Jones paced the guests with 20 points.
Daniel Ameyaw and
William Chavarin each scored 12 points for Stan State.
FIRST HALF: The first seven minutes of the game was even until
Jeremiah Jones' lay-up gave Stan State a 17-12 lead. Sonoma State (12-14, 8-12 CCAA) outscored the Warriors 12-2 to take a 24-19 lead with nine minutes left in the half.
Daniel Ameyaw's lay-up capped a 14-2 run by Stan State to give the Warriors a 33-26 lead with just 2:42 left in the half. Sonoma State outscored the Warriors 6-2 in the final minutes of the half to cut the Stan State lead to 35-32 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: The hosts scored the first five points of the new half to take a 39-37 in the first two minutes of second half. A
Jason Zimmer three off a
Cameron Walker pass gave Stan State (11-15, 8-12 CCAA) a 45-41 lead. A trey by
William Chavarin off another Walker pass increased the guests' lead to 50-44 with 13 minutes left in the half. The game went back and forth with the Warriors taking a 60-54 lead on another trey by Chavarin off a
Jeremiah Jones' pass with seven minutes left in regulation. In the next four minutes, Sonoma State went on a 19-5 run to take a 73-65 lead on two free throws by Jakob Milling. Three times in the next three minutes, Stan State cut the deficit to four including 76-72 on a Jones' jumper with three seconds left. It was a little too late as Nick Medeiros' two free throws sealed the 76-72 victory for the Seawolves.
25TH STRAIGHT: Jeremiah Jones recorded his 25
th straight game of scoring in double figures with his 20 points this evening. This was his tenth game of scoring 20 or more points this season. He is averaging 18.9 points per game this season while shooting 87.9% from the line and 46.7% from the field.
SECOND STRAIGHT GAME: For the second straight game, Stan State tied its season high with 11 treys made.
William Chavarin led the way going four-for-seven from beyond the arc.
Jason Zimmer was two-for-four while
Jeremiah Jones was two-for-five.
Jason Cibull and
Jordan Smith each made their attempt from beyond the arc.
Jonathan Tchengang connected on one of his three attempts from three-point land.
ONE GAME OUT: After going 1-1 this weekend, Stan State has a 8-12 CCAA record which places them in a three-way tie for eighth place with San Francisco State and Sonoma State. The Warriors are one game out of sixth place (Cal State East Bay and Cal State Los Angeles, 9-11) with two games left in the regular season. The top six teams at the end of the regular season on March 1 will receive a berth to the 2024-25 CCAA Basketball Tournament Championship. Also securing a spot in the tournament are Cal State Dominguez Hills, Chico State, and Cal State San Bernardino. Sitting in a tie for fourth place are Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly Humboldt.
LAST HOME GAMES: Stan State will finish out the regular season with two home games at The Fitz. The Warriors will host Cal Poly Pomona this Thursday, February 27 on KW Recovery Night at 7:30 p.m. Their final home game will be Saturday, March 1 at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day against Cal State San Bernardino.
