Warriors Fall to Cal Poly Pomona

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State started its final home stand of the regular season with a 72-61 loss to the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos this evening in a CCAA match-up at The Fitz.  Jeremiah Jones led the way for the hosts with 15 points to go with his six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Jonathan Tchengang chipped in 12 points for the Warriors.

FIRST HALF:  Cal Poly Pomona took a 6-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game.  Jason Zimmer's trey off a Jeremiah Jones' pass capped 12-4 run by the Warriors and took a 14-10 lead with nine minutes left in the half.  The Broncos came back with a 10-1 run of their own to take a 20-15 lead at the 6:10 mark of the first half.  Back-to-back lay-ups by Mahda Fallay and Jonathan Tchengang gave the Warriors back the lead, 24-22, with two minutes left in the half.  Cal Poly Pomona (17-10, 12-9 CCAA) finished the half outscoring the Warriors 10-1 to take a 32-25 lead heading into the locker room.

SECOND HALF: Stan State scored the first four points of the second half on lay-ups by William Chavarin and Mahday Fallay to cut the deficit to 32-29.  Miles Lewis' jumper gave Cal Poly Pomona a 41-34 lead just five minutes into the second half.  Jeremiah Jones' tip-in cut the Warrior deficit to 41-38.  In the next two minutes, Cal Poly Pomona increased its lead to 48-38.  Three minutes into the next five minutes, CPP took a 12-point lead including 60-48 on a Demarreya Lewis-Cooper jumper with seven minutes left in regulation.  William Chavarrin's three off a Jeremiah Jones' assist capped a 7-2 run by the Warriors as they cut the Bronco lead to 62-55 with five minutes to go in the game.  Cal Poly Pomona followed that with a 10-2 run of its own to take a 72-57 lead with 67 seconds left on the clock.  The Warriors scored the final four points of the game on a lay-up by Jonathan Tchengang and a lay-up by Jones to make the final CPP 72-61.

22-10:  The Warriors outscored Cal Poly Pomona 22-10 on points from turnovers.  They forced 14 by the Broncos including seven by steals.  Two each came from Jeremiah Jones and Jason ZimmerJordan Smith, William Chavarin, and Jonathan Tchengang each had one steal.

19-15:  Stan State's bench outscored the Broncos 19-15.  Eight of those came from Daniel AmeyawJason Zimmer chipped in five points while Lloyd French and Jordan Smith each scored three points.

26 STRAIGHT:  Jeremiah Jones has scored in all 26 games that he has played in this season for the Warriors.  Tonight, he scored 15 points to go with his six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  He is averaging 18.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, while shooting 46.8% from the field and dishing out 81 assists. 

SENIOR DAY:  Prior to the game this Saturday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m., Stan State will recognize its five seniors in William Chavarin, Mahda Fallay, Jeremiah Jones, Jonathan Tchengang, and Cameron Walker in a pre-game ceremony.

LAST GAME:  Stan State's opponent on Senior Day will be Cal State San Bernardino.  The Coyotes defeated Cal State Monterey Bay this evening, 87-66, in Seaside.  Earlier this season in San Bernardino, Stan State lost 65-52 to the Coyotes on January 16.
