TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State improved to 3-1 with a doubleheader sweep of the Academy of Art Urban Knights this afternoon at Warrior Field.
McKenna Beach went two-for-two with a two-run home run to key game one's victory. In the night cap,
Victoria Alarcon pitched her second consecutive complete game shutout as the Warriors defeated the Urban Knights 6-0.
GAME ONE: The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the opener on a one-out run single by
McKenna Beach that brought in
Katie Thornsberry who reached on a lead-off walk to begin the first. Stan State doubled their lead to 2-0 in its half of the third. Beach and
Sarah Warden started the inning being hit by a pitch.
Allejandra Perea drove home Beach with a run scoring double. With one out, Malia Babaas reached on a bunt single. She later scored when
Sarah Warden reached on a fielder's choice to third base to increase the Warriors' lead to 3-0.
Academy of Art (0-2) cut the Warrior lead to 3-2 with a two-run fifth.
Karli DalBianco drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth for Stan State. She scored on a two-run home run by Beach down the left field line to give the Warriors a 5-2 lead.
Stan State reliever,
Bree Barner pitched a scoreless seventh as she preserved the 5-2 Warrior victory for her first collegiate save. She finished the game pitching two scoreless innings while striking out two.
Sasha Martello (1-0) pitched five innings, giving up six hits and two runs while walking one.
THIRD OF HER CAREER: McKenna Beach finished the opener going two-for-two with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Beach hit her first home run as a Warrior and third of her collegiate career. The junior transfer's first two home run of her collegiate career came at Cal Poly Humboldt.
TWELFTH CAREER VICTORY: Sasha Martello recorded her twelfth victory as a Warrior this afternoon. She pitched five innings, giving up six hits and two runs while walking one. In her first season, the senior went 11-6.
GAME TWO: The night cap was a pitcher's duel between the Urban Knights' Kamielle Powell and the Warrior's
Victoria Alarcon for the first four and a half innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Stan State erupted for six runs on four errors to take a 6-0 lead.
Avery Jolley drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a
Malia Babasa single.
Katie Thornsberry loaded the bases with a bunt single. Jolley scored on another Warrior single, this one off the bat of
Karli DalBianco. They increased to 2-0 on a
McKenna Beach sacrifice fly to left field that brought in Babasa. The next Warrior batter,
Sarah Warden, reached on an Urban Knight error to load the bases once again. With two outs, pinch-hitter
Madison Rosebrough drew a walk to bring in Thornsberry. The hosts increased their lead to 6-0 on bases clearing double to center field by
Lauryn Serda as they took a 6-0 lead. Stan State starter,
Victoria Alarcon (2-0), picked up the victory by finishing off her complete game as the Warriors took the night cap 6-0.
ALARCON: Senior
Victoria Alarcon pitched her second consecutive complete game shutout victory in the night cap. She pitched seven innings, giving up just two hits and no runs, while striking out a season high ten and walking two. She is now 2-0 with 17 strikeouts and just two walks in 14 innings pitched. Alarcon has given up just seven hits in the Warriors' two games.
SERDA: Lauryn Serda recorded her second multiple-hit game and first multiple-RIB game in the night cap. Serda went two-for-three with three runs batted and had a double. For the season, she is hitting .400 with a .600 slugging and a .400 on-base percentages. She has two doubles while driving in three runs.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will end their six-game home stand with a noon starting doubleheader this Friday, February 7 against Dominican (Calif.) on Faculty Staff/National Women and Girl in Sports Day. The Penguins are 3-2 after playing five games in the Concordia Kickoff Classic in Irvine, Calif. After hosting Dominican on Friday, Stan State will travel to Atherton, Calif., for a non-conference doubleheader on February 11 at Menlo College which starts at noon. They will return home February 13-16 to host the 2025 Tournament of Champions (TOC). In the TOC, Stan State will face Northwest Nazarene (February 13 at 3:00 p.m.), Central Washington (February 16 at 10:00 a.m.), and Simon Fraser (February 16 at 12:30 p.m.).
